DESCRIPTION
Victron BMV-702 Battery Monitor: Precision Energy Management for 12V to 48V Systems
Advanced Battery Monitoring with Midpoint Voltage Detection
The Victron BMV-702 is a high-precision battery monitor that functions as an intelligent fuel gauge for your energy storage system. Engineered for demanding off-grid, marine, and mobile applications, it provides real-time insight into battery state of charge, current flow, and remaining runtime. Unlike basic voltage-based indicators, the BMV-702 uses sophisticated algorithms to track ampere-hours consumed, compensating for discharge rate, temperature, and battery age—delivering accuracy within ±0.4% for current and ±0.3% for voltage.
This model includes a dedicated secondary input for midpoint voltage monitoring, a critical feature for protecting series-connected battery banks. By detecting voltage imbalances early, it helps prevent catastrophic failure of expensive battery arrays—a capability typically reserved for industrial systems, now accessible for caravans, yachts, and remote power installations.
Why Midpoint Voltage Monitoring Matters
In a series battery string, one weak cell can compromise the entire bank. The BMV-702 continuously measures the voltage at the halfway point of the string. A growing deviation from the expected half-voltage signals developing issues such as cell imbalance, internal leakage, or temperature variations. Early alerts allow corrective action—like equalisation charging or cell replacement—before irreversible damage occurs. For optimal battery life, pair with the Victron Battery Balancer (BMS012201000).
Comprehensive System Visibility
The backlit LCD display presents essential parameters at a glance: battery voltage, current, power consumption in watts, ampere-hours consumed, and state of charge as a percentage. The calculated time-to-go indicator estimates remaining runtime based on present load, removing guesswork from energy management. Historical data logging captures deepest discharge, average discharge, and cumulative energy throughput, enabling informed decisions about battery health and usage patterns.
- Midpoint voltage monitoring safeguards series-connected battery banks against cell failure
- 500A quick-connect shunt included, with scalability up to 10,000A for large installations
- VE.Direct communication port for integration with GX devices, VRM portal, or third-party controllers
- Programmable relay to automatically disconnect non-critical loads or trigger a generator at low state of charge
- Audible and visual alarms for immediate notification of voltage, current, or temperature thresholds
- Wide 6.5–95 VDC input range supports 12V, 24V, and 48V systems without additional converters
- Ultra-low self-consumption of 4 mA (backlight off), minimising drain on the monitored battery
- High-resolution measurement down to 0.01A, capturing parasitic loads and small charge currents
Designed for Reliable Installation
All electrical connections terminate at the shunt’s integrated PCB, simplifying wiring and reducing potential fault points. The shunt features M10 (approx. 3/8") brass connection bolts compatible with heavy-duty lugs up to 95 mm² (4/0 AWG). A 10-metre RJ12 cable connects the shunt to the head unit, allowing flexible placement. The kit includes a fused battery cable, and the monitor can be flush-mounted using the included square or round bezels—accommodating various panel designs.
The head unit carries an IP55 rating, suitable for protected indoor locations such as switchboards or cabin interiors. Operating temperature range spans -40°C to +50°C, ensuring reliable performance in extreme climates.
Applications Across Mobile and Off-Grid Energy
The BMV-702 excels in environments where accurate battery status is essential:
- Caravans and motorhomes: Prevent deep discharges that shorten battery life, and know exactly when to recharge.
- Marine vessels: Monitor house and starter banks, with midpoint voltage protecting expensive lithium or lead-acid arrays.
- Remote off-grid systems: Integrate with Victron inverters and solar chargers via VE.Direct for automated energy management.
- Industrial backup power: Use the programmable relay to start a generator or shed non-critical loads during extended outages.
This non-Bluetooth version is ideal for installations where local display is preferred, or where connectivity is handled through a GX device. For wireless smartphone monitoring, consider the BMV-712 Smart.
