Battery Combiners
Manage dual battery charging safely with our intelligent combiners, VSRs, and robust marine selector switches
Intelligent Battery Combiners, VSRs & Marine Switches
Managing multiple battery banks in your caravan, 4WD, or boat requires robust and reliable hardware. When you are travelling off-grid, ensuring that your house batteries receive charge from the alternator without risking a flat starter battery is critical. Our curated range of battery combiners, automatic charging relays, and manual selector switches provides everything you need to safely bridge, isolate, and control your dual battery setup.
Manual Battery Switches and Selectors
For complete manual control over your electrical system, high-amp battery switches are essential. We stock Exotronic heavy-duty on/off battery switches in 300A and 350A variants, providing an ultra durable disconnect point for system maintenance or emergency isolation. Designed for harsh marine and off-road environments, these switches handle high continuous loads with ease.
For boats and complex vehicle setups, Blue Sea Systems offers premium 4-position battery selector switches (OFF/1/2/1+2). These allow you to seamlessly switch between your primary and secondary battery banks, or combine them in an emergency to start your engine if the cranking battery is low. Always ensure your switches are paired with correctly sized battery cables and secure cable lugs to minimise voltage drop and heat generation.
Voltage Sensitive Relays (VSRs) and Smart Combiners
If you prefer an automated charging solution, a Voltage Sensitive Relay (VSR) is highly effective. Devices like the Victron Cyrix-ct intelligent battery combiner automatically parallel your starter and house batteries when they detect the alternator is running and voltage has reached a specific threshold. Once the engine is turned off and the voltage drops, the Cyrix-ct disconnects the banks, preventing your 12V appliances from draining the starter battery.
Unlike older mechanical isolators that suffer from voltage drop, intelligent combiners use robust contactors and microprocessor control to ensure maximum charge efficiency.
Lithium Compatible Charging Relays
Upgrading to a lithium (LiFePO4) house battery requires specialised charging control. Standard VSRs can cycle erratically due to the higher resting voltage of lithium cells. The Victron Cyrix-Li intelligent charge relay is specifically programmed to handle lithium voltage profiles, ensuring safe and stable alternator charging. The Cyrix-Li range also includes load relays designed to disconnect heavy loads if the lithium battery management system (BMS) detects low cell voltage.
System Integration and Core Benefits
- Exotronic On/Off Switches: High-current manual isolation for secure system maintenance.
- Blue Sea Selector Switches: Versatile 4-position power routing, ideal for marine applications.
- Victron Cyrix VSRs: Intelligent, automatic dual battery charging with zero voltage drop.
- Victron Battery Diodes: Reliable multi-battery parallel charging using solid-state components.
Compatibility Notes
When selecting a battery combiner or switch, ensure its continuous current rating exceeds the maximum output of your vehicle alternator and the maximum draw of your connected loads. Most Victron Cyrix models automatically detect 12V or 24V systems, simplifying installation across different vehicles. If you are integrating a lithium house battery into a vehicle with a smart alternator, verify whether a DC-DC charger is required instead of a standard relay to properly regulate the charge current. Always mount combiners and switches in a well-ventilated, dry location, using appropriately rated inline fuses near the battery terminals to protect your cabling.
