DESCRIPTION
Genasun GVB-8-WP: Advanced MPPT Boost Controller for 48V Lead-Acid Systems
Efficient Voltage Boosting for Off-Grid and Mobile Applications
The Genasun GVB-8-WP is a specialised MPPT solar charge controller engineered to charge 48V lead-acid battery banks from lower-voltage solar panels. Unlike conventional controllers that require panel voltage to exceed battery voltage, this boost controller steps up input from panels as low as 5V, enabling flexible system design. With 96-99% typical electrical efficiency and ultra-fast 15Hz MPPT tracking, it maximises energy harvest even under variable light conditions.
Designed for demanding environments, the fully potted, waterproof construction protects internal electronics from moisture, dust, and vibration. This makes it an ideal choice for marine solar charging, RV power systems, golf cart solar kits, industrial off-grid setups, and military applications. The controller operates silently with no cooling fan, reducing points of failure and ensuring long-term reliability.
True MPPT vs. Nominal MPPT
Many controllers claim MPPT functionality but only approximate the maximum power point. The Genasun GVB-8-WP employs true Maximum Power Point Tracking, continuously adjusting to the panel's optimal operating voltage at 15 times per second. This results in superior low-light performance and faster energy recovery after shading, directly translating to more amp-hours stored in your battery each day.
Key Features
- Voltage boost capability – charges 48V batteries from panels with Vmp as low as 5V, supporting 12V, 24V, or 36V nominal solar arrays
- 96-99% peak efficiency – minimises conversion losses for maximum power delivery
- Waterproof and potted design – withstands immersion, salt spray, and high humidity; ideal for marine and coastal installations
- Multi-stage charging with temperature compensation – automatically adjusts bulk, absorption, and float voltages based on battery temperature for optimal lead-acid health
- Integrated in-line fuse protection – safeguards against overcurrent events without external components
- Wide operating temperature range – functions reliably from -40°C to 85°C, with full power output up to 70°C ambient
- Low self-consumption – draws only 5mA in standby, preserving battery charge during idle periods
- Pre-wired flying leads – 16 AWG tinned wire with pre-stripped ends for straightforward installation
Built for Harsh Environments
The GVB-8-WP's electronics are encapsulated in a proprietary potting compound, creating a fully waterproof and vibration-resistant assembly. This eliminates corrosion risks and thermal stress common in unsealed controllers. Whether mounted in a bilge, exposed to road spray, or operating in desert heat, the controller maintains consistent performance without derating. The compact aluminium housing (5.5" x 3.2" x 2.2" / 14cm x 8.1cm x 5.5cm) and lightweight design (10.3oz / 290g) simplify integration into space-constrained installations.
Application Flexibility
This controller excels in scenarios where panel voltage is lower than the battery bank voltage, a common challenge in mobile and off-grid systems. Typical use cases include:
- Golf carts – roof-mounted 12V or 24V panels charging 48V battery packs
- Marine vessels – maintaining 48V house banks from compact solar arrays
- RVs and campervans – boosting voltage from portable panels to high-voltage battery systems
- Remote monitoring stations – reliable power for 48V equipment with limited solar real estate
- Street lighting – efficient charging of 48V battery backups from small solar modules
The controller automatically adapts to the connected panel and battery, requiring no user configuration. Simply wire the panel input and battery output, and the GVB-8-WP handles the rest, including multi-stage charging and temperature-compensated voltage regulation.
Optimise Your Off-Grid Power System
Upgrade your solar charging setup with the Genasun GVB-8-WP 48V boost controller and experience the difference that true MPPT and rugged waterproof design can make. Whether you're powering a golf cart, sailboat, or remote industrial equipment, this controller delivers dependable energy conversion in a compact, maintenance-free package.
