RV Cable Planner: Map Your Complete 12V Wiring System

RV Cable Planner planning tool from Solar 4 RVs

Document every cable run in an RV power system, record routing details and build a consolidated cable and accessory list before installation.

Sizing one cable is useful; planning every run is what turns a collection of components into an installable system. The free RV Cable Planner records the circuits between your batteries, charging sources, protection, distribution and loads, then brings the recommendations into one project summary.

Use it for 12V caravan, camper, motorhome and off-grid projects where cable length, current, routing and termination requirements vary from run to run.

What belongs in a complete cable plan

Create a separate run wherever the source, destination, current, conductor length, installation conditions or protection changes. Naming each run by purpose—such as battery to main fuse, solar controller to battery or distribution panel to fridge—makes the final plan easier to check and build.

  • Source and destination for each positive and negative path.
  • Expected continuous current and any relevant start-up or surge current.
  • The actual conductor route, including the return path where applicable.
  • Voltage-drop target, cable recommendation and installation notes.
  • Required lugs, heat shrink, protection and other accessories.
RV Cable Planner guided tour highlighting a planning step
The built-in guided tour highlights the next part of the RV Cable Planner workflow.

Take the planner tour

Select the question-mark button to open the guided tour. It moves from project actions to the project summary and bill of materials, then into the cable-runs toolbar, an individual run, its recommendation and routing details, and finally the cart workflow.

The tour follows the same sequence you will use on a real project, so it is worth completing before entering a large set of circuits.

Plan runs first, then verify the system

Sketch the full system and assign clear names before entering data. Measure the installed route rather than straight-line distance, including bends, vertical drops, service loops and the return conductor. Enter realistic current, then review each recommendation and the consolidated bill of materials.

Keep the finished run names with your installation notes so later maintenance can trace each circuit back to the same design assumptions.

The planner is a design aid, not a substitute for the equipment manuals, applicable standards or competent installation. Check cable ampacity, voltage drop, terminal compatibility, fuse or circuit-breaker placement, isolation and environmental ratings as a complete safety system.

Shop the matching equipment

Use the plan to narrow your shortlist, then check the current product specifications and installation requirements:
