Battery Protection for 12V, 24V and 48V Systems

A deeply discharged battery bank can leave you without power, and repeated deep discharge can shorten battery life. This range of battery protection devices disconnects loads, charge sources or both when voltage or battery management signals indicate a problem. Options include a standalone 12V low voltage cutoff for a 4WD canopy, BMS-controlled relays for a lithium caravan system, and the battery management needed for 48V off-grid, tiny home, marine and commercial installations.

Low Voltage Disconnects and Cut Off Switches

The Victron BatteryProtect series is available in 65A, 100A and 220A models for 12/24V systems, plus a dedicated 48V 100A model. Smart BatteryProtect versions add Bluetooth, so you can set disconnect and reconnect thresholds from your phone. The Enerdrive 60A Battery Guard is an IP66-rated low battery cutout for locations exposed to dust and water. Each unit sits between the battery and your loads and switches them off automatically before the bank reaches a damaging state of charge.

Lithium Battery Management and Relays

Lithium systems need protection that responds to the battery's own BMS signals as well as to voltage. The range covers several BMS types for different system layouts:

  • Lynx Smart BMS 500 and 1000: Busbar-mounted BMS units with a built-in contactor, available in standard and NG (NextGen) versions.
  • Smart BMS 12/200 and Smart BMS CL 12/100: Compact 12V BMS units with dedicated alternator, charge and load connections for vehicle-based systems.
  • miniBMS, smallBMS and NG variants: Simple controllers that switch BatteryProtect units, chargers and loads.
  • VE.Bus BMS NG and V2: BMS units for systems built around VE.Bus inverter/chargers.
  • Cyrix-Li Charge and Load Relays: 120A and 230A relays in 12/24V and 24/48V versions that separately control charge sources and loads.
  • Pre-Charge Cable: Pre-charges inverter capacitors to limit inrush current at switch-on.

If you are matching a BMS to Victron's latest lithium range, our guide introducing Victron NG lithium batteries and BMS explains the differences between standard and NG models.

How to Choose Battery Protection

Compare your system needs against these criteria before you buy:

Battery chemistry: Lead-acid, AGM and Gel banks are often well served by a standalone low voltage disconnect. Victron lithium batteries require a compatible Victron BMS, and some models also pair with BatteryProtect or Cyrix-Li relays.

System voltage: Most 12/24V BatteryProtect models detect system voltage automatically. 48V systems need the dedicated 48V models or 24/48V Cyrix-Li relays.

Continuous current: Choose a rating with comfortable headroom above your maximum continuous load or charge current to reduce heat build-up.

Load or charge path: BatteryProtect units are designed for load disconnection. Use a Cyrix-Li Charge Relay where charge sources need control. For dual battery charging from an alternator, see our battery combiners.

Visibility: Pair your protection device with one of our battery monitors to track state of charge and avoid nuisance disconnects.

Find the low voltage disconnect, BMS or relay that suits your voltage, current and battery chemistry, and protect your battery bank from avoidable deep-discharge damage. Order your battery protection today.
