How to choose and compare batteries for caravans, RVs and off-grid systems
The right battery depends on the loads it must supply, how long those loads need to run, the charging sources available and the space and weight limits of the installation. Use the comparison table above to narrow our battery range by exact specifications instead of relying on capacity or chemistry alone.
Start with daily energy use and required battery capacity
List the appliances and equipment the battery will run, their power consumption and the approximate hours of use between charging opportunities. Include continuous loads such as fridges and communications equipment as well as occasional higher loads such as pumps, coffee machines, induction cooking, air compressors and inverter-powered appliances. Allow for conversion losses and a practical reserve rather than planning to use every stated amp hour.
Capacity in amp hours only compares batteries at the same nominal voltage. Stored energy in kilowatt hours gives a clearer comparison across 12V, 24V and 48V batteries. For example, two batteries with the same amp-hour rating but different voltages do not store the same amount of energy. The table shows both measurements so you can compare like with like.
Choose the correct 12V, 24V or 48V system voltage
Battery voltage must match the system design, including the inverter, solar controller, DC-DC charger, mains charger and DC loads. Higher-voltage systems can reduce current for the same power, but they require compatible equipment throughout the installation. Do not select a battery voltage from capacity alone, and do not assume a product described as 12V can be substituted into a 24V or 48V system without a manufacturer-approved series configuration.
Compare lithium, AGM, gel and other battery chemistries
- LiFePO4 lithium batteries can provide high usable capacity and lower weight for their stored energy. They require compatible charging settings and an appropriate battery-management arrangement.
- AGM batteries are sealed lead-acid batteries used in many recreational and standby applications. Their usable capacity, weight and charging requirements differ from lithium.
- Gel batteries are another sealed lead-acid option with chemistry-specific charging limits. Confirm every charger has a suitable profile before installation.
- Flooded lead-acid batteries can suit stationary applications but may require maintenance, ventilation and installation precautions that are not appropriate for every vehicle or enclosed space.
- Sodium-ion batteries have their own operating and charging requirements. Compare the exact product specifications and manufacturer documentation rather than applying assumptions from another chemistry.
Battery current ratings and inverter suitability
Continuous discharge current helps determine whether a battery or battery bank can support the intended inverter and DC loads. A battery may have sufficient stored energy for an appliance but still have an inadequate continuous or peak current rating to start or run it. Compare the inverter's DC input demand, surge behaviour and the complete system design with the battery manufacturer's limits.
Maximum charge current helps match the battery to solar controllers, DC-DC chargers, mains chargers and alternator charging systems. Where a manufacturer does not specify an equivalent current limit, the table states that the value is not specified instead of estimating it.
Victron Smart lithium batteries require a compatible BMS
Victron Smart and Smart NG lithium batteries marked Requires BMS in the table must be used with the appropriate external Victron battery-management components; Bluetooth monitoring is not a substitute for a BMS. Follow the requirements for the exact battery generation and system design. See our Victron battery systems and BMS options.
Check dimensions, weight and installation requirements
Measure the usable battery compartment and allow for terminals, cable bends, fuses, isolation equipment, ventilation and access for inspection or service. The listed dimensions describe the battery itself and may not include terminal covers, mounting restraints or required clearances. Use the maximum length, width, height and total-weight filters to rule out products that do not suit the available space or payload.
Battery restraint, orientation, environmental protection and ventilation requirements vary by product and chemistry. Vehicle, marine and off-grid installations should follow the battery instructions and applicable installation requirements rather than using the table as an installation specification.
Match every charging source to the battery
Check the solar controller, alternator or DC-DC charger, 240V charger and inverter-charger. Confirm the supported chemistry, absorption voltage, float behaviour, temperature limits and maximum charging current for the exact battery. Replacing lead-acid with lithium can require charger configuration or equipment changes even when the nominal voltage appears the same.
Single batteries, twin packs and larger battery banks
Use Show Twin Packs to compare configured two-battery options. Pack energy and total weight are calculated from the exact reference battery and quantity, while the table keeps per-battery values visible. Before connecting batteries in parallel or series, confirm that the manufacturer permits the proposed configuration, the batteries are suitably matched and the cabling, protection and balancing arrangements are correct.
Choosing a battery for different applications
Use the application and chemistry information when comparing deep-cycle batteries for caravans, motorhomes, camper trailers, 4WDs, boats, marine systems, backup power and stationary off-grid storage. Lithium iron phosphate batteries can offer lower weight and higher usable capacity, while AGM, gel, flooded lead-acid and sodium-ion batteries may suit different budgets, charging systems and operating conditions.
Complete the battery, solar and charging system
A battery is one part of a complete electrical system. Once you have narrowed the capacity, chemistry, voltage and physical size, check how the battery will be charged, protected, monitored and connected to the loads. Each component must suit the same system voltage and the battery manufacturer's limits. The related ranges below make it easier to move from a shortlist to a compatible system design.
Compare dedicated lithium and AGM battery ranges
If chemistry is your main decision, browse our lithium and LiFePO4 batteries or AGM deep-cycle batteries. The dedicated collections bring together chemistry-specific options, while the table above is better for comparing dimensions, weight, usable electrical ratings and products across multiple chemistries. Before choosing lithium for a caravan or 4WD upgrade, confirm whether existing chargers can be configured correctly and whether the battery uses an internal BMS or requires external battery-management equipment.
Choose mains, alternator and solar charging
Most touring systems use more than one charging source. A mains charger is useful at home or on a powered site, a DC-DC charger can manage alternator charging while driving, and a solar charge controller manages energy from the panels. Browse lithium-compatible battery chargers, or narrow the mains-charger range by system voltage with our 12V battery chargers and 24V battery chargers.
For charging from a vehicle, compare our DC-DC battery chargers. For a dedicated solar input, browse solar charge controllers and check the controller's supported battery voltage, charging profile, maximum output current and permitted solar-array input. Combined DC-DC and solar-input products can simplify some installations, but their two input functions and limits still need to be checked against the proposed panels and battery bank.
Match the inverter to the battery's current limits
If the system will run 230V appliances, compare our pure sine wave inverters and inverter-chargers only after listing the continuous load and start-up surge of the appliances. The inverter wattage does not determine battery capacity by itself. It also creates a DC current demand that must remain within the battery or battery bank's continuous and peak discharge ratings, as well as the limits of the BMS, cabling, fuses, busbars and isolation equipment.
Add battery monitoring and management equipment
A voltage reading alone does not always give a useful state-of-charge estimate, particularly in a lithium system with a relatively flat voltage curve. A shunt-based monitor measures current entering and leaving the battery and can make day-to-day energy use easier to understand. Explore our battery monitors and shunts, then review the broader battery-management range for protection, combining, balancing and isolation components. A monitor reports system behaviour; it does not replace a required BMS or the protection specified by the battery manufacturer.
Plan the enclosure, restraint and service access
After filtering by battery dimensions, allow additional room for terminals, cable bends, terminal covers, fuses, switches, ventilation and future inspection. Our battery boxes and pre-wired battery-box systems can provide a practical starting point for portable or compact installations, but the selected enclosure must suit the exact battery and its mounting, environmental and ventilation requirements. Include the completed enclosure, cables and electrical equipment when checking the vehicle's available space and payload.
Battery comparison frequently asked questions
How large should a caravan or RV battery be?
There is no single capacity that suits every vehicle. Estimate daily energy use, decide how long the system must operate between charging opportunities, then account for battery chemistry, permitted depth of discharge, charging performance and a practical reserve. High-power appliances also require a separate current and inverter check.
Is a 100Ah lithium battery the same as a 100Ah AGM battery?
They share an amp-hour rating at a stated voltage, but usable energy, discharge limits, charging requirements, cycle behaviour, weight and low-temperature operation can differ. Compare the complete specifications and intended use instead of treating the capacity label as the whole battery.
Can I replace a lead-acid battery with lithium?
Sometimes, but it is not automatically a drop-in change. Confirm charger compatibility, alternator charging, cable and fuse ratings, inverter requirements, low-temperature behaviour, battery monitoring, physical restraint and any required BMS or control equipment.
Can different batteries be mixed in one bank?
Do not assume batteries of different chemistry, capacity, model, age or condition can be mixed. Follow the battery manufacturer's permitted series or parallel configurations and use matched products where required.
What does “Requires BMS” mean?
It means the battery needs compatible external battery-management equipment as part of the system. The required components vary by battery family and generation. Use the linked Victron battery-system range and confirm the final design against the current product documentation.
