Blue Sea 100A 285-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker

DESCRIPTION

Integrated 100A Switching and Overcurrent Protection for Marine and Mobile DC Systems

The Blue Sea 285-Series 100A Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers a reliable, space-saving solution for managing high-current DC electrical systems. By combining overcurrent protection and manual on-off switching into a single compact unit, this breaker eliminates the need to wire separate isolation switches and fuse holders. It is engineered specifically for demanding marine, RV, caravan, and off-grid power setups where dependable circuit protection is critical.

Engineered for Harsh Environments and Safety Compliance

When working with high-amperage DC circuits in boats or camper trailers, environmental exposure and safety compliance are paramount. The 285-Series features a weather-resistant construction designed to endure moisture, vibration, and coastal conditions. Furthermore, it meets strict SAE J1171 external ignition protection requirements. This makes the unit safe for installation aboard petrol-powered vessels and inside battery compartments where explosive fumes or gases might accumulate, reducing the risk of accidental ignition compared to standard, unrated switches.

Intuitive Operation and Fail-Safe Design

Managing your electrical distribution is straightforward thanks to the visible yellow reset lever, which clearly indicates when the circuit is open or tripped. A dedicated red push-to-trip button allows for immediate manual disconnection when servicing downstream equipment or isolating battery banks. For maximum protection against electrical faults, the internal mechanism utilises a trip-free design. This ensures the circuit breaker cannot be manually held closed during an active fault condition, protecting your wiring and expensive electronics from thermal damage and potential fire hazards.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Dual-Function Design: Combines 100A thermal circuit protection and manual on-off switching in one compact housing.
  • SAE J1171 Ignition Protected: Safe for installation in petrol boat bilges, engine rooms, and enclosed battery boxes.
  • Trip-Free Mechanism: Internal contacts cannot be forced closed while an overcurrent fault persists, ensuring fail-safe protection.
  • Clear Visual Status: High-visibility yellow reset lever provides instant confirmation of the circuit status, paired with a red push-to-trip button.
  • Marine-Grade Terminals: Equipped with corrosion-resistant M8 stainless steel threaded studs to secure heavy-duty ring terminals with minimal voltage drop.
  • Terminal Insulation: Integrated rubber protection caps cover the M8 studs to prevent accidental short circuits in tight wiring enclosures.
  • Weather-Resistant Build: Sealed housing resists moisture and dust ingress, suited to exposed marine and 4WD environments.

Application Considerations and Installation

The recessed mounting holes allow for a clean, secure surface-mount installation on flat panels, bulkheads, or power distribution boards. The M8 stud terminals provide ample surface area for high-current lugs, whilst the attached insulating boots fold directly over the connections for neat and compliant wiring.

Important Application Note: While this unit functions as a convenient manual disconnect switch, do not use the breaker as a primary switch where high inrush currents are expected, as repeated high-inrush switching can degrade the thermal tripping contacts over time.

Upgrade Your DC Circuit Protection

Equip your vessel, caravan, or dual-battery system with the Blue Sea 285-Series 100A Circuit Breaker for compliant, resettable protection that stands up to tough Australian conditions.
