DESCRIPTION
Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250/70-Tr: High-Capacity Solar Charge Controller for 12V, 24V, and 48V Systems
Maximise Solar Yield with Ultrafast MPPT Technology
The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 250/70-Tr is a premium solar charge controller engineered for large-scale off-grid and mobile energy systems. Leveraging ultrafast Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), this controller adapts to rapidly changing light conditions—such as partial cloud cover—to harvest up to 30% more energy than traditional PWM controllers and up to 10% more than slower MPPT alternatives. This ensures your battery bank receives the maximum available power throughout the day, reducing generator runtime and fuel costs in remote installations.
Designed for 12V, 24V, and 48V battery systems with automatic voltage detection, the 250/70-Tr supports substantial solar arrays—up to 1000W at 12V, 2000W at 24V, and 4000W at 48V. Its 250V maximum PV open-circuit voltage allows for long series strings of panels, minimising cable losses and simplifying installation in larger setups such as off-grid homes, commercial sites, and marine vessels.
Advanced Partial Shading Optimisation
In real-world conditions, partial shading from trees, antennas, or adjacent structures can create multiple power peaks on a solar array's voltage curve. Conventional MPPT controllers often lock onto a local peak, missing the true maximum power point. Victron's innovative BlueSolar algorithm actively scans and locks onto the optimal global peak, ensuring consistent energy harvest even in challenging shading scenarios. This feature is critical for installations where unshaded roof space is limited.
Built-In Bluetooth and VE.Direct Connectivity
Integrated Bluetooth Smart enables wireless configuration, monitoring, and firmware updates via the free VictronConnect app on your smartphone or tablet. View real-time solar yield, battery state, and historical data without additional hardware. For wired integration, the VE.Direct port connects to GX monitoring devices (such as the Cerbo GX or Color Control GX), allowing seamless inclusion in a Victron Remote Management (VRM) portal for remote oversight.
Exceptional Efficiency and Thermal Design
With a peak conversion efficiency of 99% and full rated output up to 40°C ambient temperature, the 250/70-Tr operates without a cooling fan—reducing noise, maintenance, and potential points of failure. The fanless design relies on a robust aluminium heatsink for passive cooling, making it suitable for dusty or marine environments where fan-forced airflow could introduce contaminants.
Flexible Charging and System Integration
The controller features a fully programmable charge algorithm with eight pre-set battery profiles selectable via a rotary switch. This accommodates a wide range of battery chemistries, including flooded lead-acid, AGM, gel, and lithium (LiFePO₄). An internal temperature sensor provides automatic voltage compensation, while optional external sensing via a Victron Smart Battery Sense or BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor improves accuracy for battery banks located away from the controller.
