DESCRIPTION
Victron Smart BMS 12/200: Intelligent Battery Management for Victron LiFePO4 Systems
Advanced Protection and Control for 12.8V Lithium Battery Banks
The Victron Smart BMS 12/200 is a sophisticated battery management system engineered to safeguard and optimise Victron LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries in 12V setups. Designed for demanding mobile and off-grid applications, it integrates alternator charging, load disconnect, and system monitoring into a single compact unit. By actively preventing cell damage from over-voltage, under-voltage, and over-temperature, this smart BMS extends battery lifespan and ensures reliable performance in caravans, marine vessels, and remote power systems.
Unlike generic BMS solutions, the Victron Smart BMS 12/200 offers seamless communication with Victron batteries via built-in Bluetooth, enabling real-time monitoring and configuration through the VictronConnect app. Its MOSFET-based switching eliminates mechanical relays, providing spark-free operation and enhanced durability—critical for installations in ignition-protected environments.
Key Features
- Alternator and Starter Battery Protection: Limits input current to approximately 90% of the fuse rating (e.g., a 100A fuse restricts current to ~90A), safeguarding both the alternator and LFP battery from overload. Prevents reverse current flow from the LFP battery to the starter battery, avoiding deep discharge damage.
- System+ Port (200A Continuous): A bidirectional power port supporting up to 200A charge/discharge, ideal for inverters, chargers, or direct DC loads. Features short-circuit protection with a 400A peak discharge capability.
- Load and Charge Disconnect Outputs: Automatically disconnects loads on cell under-voltage (adjustable 2.6–2.8V/cell) and stops charging on cell over-voltage or over-temperature, preventing irreversible cell damage.
- Pre-Alarm Warning: Provides an early alert (adjustable 2.85–3.15V/cell) before load disconnect, allowing time to reduce consumption or start a generator. Can drive a relay, LED, or buzzer (max 1A).
- Remote On/Off Control: Enables system shutdown via a switch or relay, with configurable behaviour through VictronConnect—either disabling only alternator charging or the entire BMS.
- Ignition-Proof Design: MOSFET switches eliminate sparks, making it safe for use in engine rooms and fuel-carrying vessels.
- IP65 Protection: Sealed electronics withstand dust, moisture, and harsh environments, ensuring reliability in marine and outdoor installations.
Why Choose the Victron Smart BMS 12/200?
Managing a lithium battery bank without a dedicated BMS risks cell imbalance, premature capacity loss, and potential safety hazards. The Victron Smart BMS 12/200 addresses these challenges by providing precise, real-time control over charging and discharging processes. Its ability to parallel up to 20 batteries (84kWh in a 12V system) makes it scalable for larger energy storage needs, while the integrated alternator protection prevents costly alternator burnout—a common issue when charging high-capacity lithium banks from standard vehicle alternators.
For installers and DIY enthusiasts, the unit simplifies wiring with clearly labelled M8 stud terminals (approx. 5/16"-18) and a dedicated Faston connector for the battery negative. The VictronConnect app offers intuitive configuration of voltage thresholds, alarm settings, and system status, reducing setup time and minimising errors.
Applications
- Caravans and Motorhomes: Manage alternator charging while protecting starter and house batteries during extended off-grid stays.
- Marine Systems: Ignition-proof and IP65-rated, ideal for yachts and boats where safety and corrosion resistance are paramount.
- Off-Grid Cabins: Integrate with solar chargers and inverters via the System+ port for reliable energy storage.
- Commercial Vehicles: Protect dual-battery setups in trucks, ambulances, and service vehicles.
Note: The alternator port’s maximum charge current is 100A with a 125A fuse. Typical de-rating factors apply based on ambient temperature and installation conditions.

Direct Customers
Victron Energy provides the following warranty to any direct customer (OEM, distributor or dealer) in relation to any products that Victron Energy has directly sold to the direct customer. This warranty is not an end-user warranty between Victron Energy and an end-user, and end-users shall not have any rights or remedies under this limited warranty towards Victron Energy directly. The direct customer shall, in turn, ensure that the end-user is provided with a warranty identical to this warranty, subject to applicable local mandatory law.
End-Users
Victron Energy may also provide a warranty directly to end-users, in which case the below warranty conditions equally apply to such warranty. In that case, end-users shall claim their warranty at their place of purchase or through the original direct customer of Victron, which can be found through the support section on Victron’s website https://www.victronenergy.com/support. Hence, the direct customer shall on behalf of Victron Energy deal with any warranty claims made under any warranty that Victron Energy may provide directly to end-users.
