DESCRIPTION

Genasun GV-5-MOD LFP 5A MPPT Solar Charge Controller

The Genasun GV-5-MOD LFP is a compact, connectorised MPPT solar charge controller designed for embedded solar power systems using lithium iron phosphate batteries. Built around Genasun’s GV-5 platform, it packages the controller as a plug-in PCB module with a 24-pin dual-row header, making it well suited to OEM products, remote monitoring hardware, asset tracking equipment, pay stations, kiosks and other compact solar-powered electronics.

This LFP version is configured for 9V 3S LiFePO4 and 12V 4S LiFePO4 battery systems. The charge profile is CC/CV, with a default 10.7V CV setpoint for 3S LiFePO4 and a secondary 14.2V CV setpoint for 4S LiFePO4 when selected through the charge profile pin. Its 5A rated battery output current and support for up to 50W or 65W rated panel power, depending on selected profile, make it a strong fit for small solar systems where power conversion efficiency, low standby draw and board-level integration matter.

  • Designed for LiFePO4: Supports 9V 3S and 12V 4S lithium iron phosphate batteries with CC/CV charging.
  • High-speed MPPT: Tracks at 15Hz to help harvest available solar energy in changing light conditions.
  • Compact plug-in format: Uses a 24-pin shrouded header for clean integration into host electronics.
  • Low self-consumption: Rated at 0.150mA operating consumption and 0.125mA standby consumption.
  • Integrated load output: Provides a 5A continuous load output with low voltage disconnect and reconnect thresholds.

Built for embedded solar power systems

The GV-5-MOD format is intended for direct integration into a host PCB or compact assembly. All electrical connections are made through a gold-plated 24-pin, dual-row, shrouded male header, with multiple pins used for higher current paths. The module also provides LED outputs and a charge profile select input, supporting product designs that need external status indication or electronic profile selection.

Efficiency is a key reason to choose Genasun in small autonomous solar applications. The GV-5-MOD LFP is specified with 99+% typical tracking efficiency and 94% to 99.85% typical electrical efficiency on the default 3S LFP profile, with 96% to 99.85% typical efficiency on the secondary 4S LFP profile. This helps maximise useful energy from limited panel area, particularly where a system may spend long periods operating at modest solar input.

Important installation considerations

The GV-5-MOD LFP is a board-level controller, not an enclosed outdoor controller. Genasun specifies that it should not be exposed to water, should not be mounted in direct sunlight or near a heat source, and requires adequate airflow to achieve full output capability. For outdoor use, the controller must be housed in an enclosure providing protection at least equivalent to NEMA Type 3.

Lithium battery system design must also be treated carefully. Genasun states that lithium controllers use the CC/CV charge profile indicated on the controller, and battery specifications must be checked to ensure the CV voltage and available solar charging power are within the battery pack’s design limits. Genasun recommends using a lithium battery with a BMS capable of disconnecting the solar charge controller if any cell is outside its rated temperature, current or voltage range, and states that cell balancing is mandatory for lithium iron phosphate.

For compact solar electronics that need efficient charging, very low consumption and reliable PCB-level integration, the Genasun GV-5-MOD LFP provides a refined MPPT solution for LiFePO4-based embedded power systems.
