Genasun 8A MPPT 36V Voltage Boost (Lead-Acid) - Waterproof Solar Charge Controller

DESCRIPTION

Genasun GVB-8-Pb-36V-WP: 8A MPPT Voltage Boost Solar Charge Controller for 36V Lead-Acid Batteries

Advanced MPPT Technology with Integrated Voltage Boost for Off-Grid, Marine, and Industrial Applications

The Genasun GVB-8-Pb-36V-WP is a specialised MPPT solar charge controller engineered to charge 36V lead-acid battery banks from lower-voltage solar panels. Unlike standard controllers that require panel voltage to exceed battery voltage, this unit’s integrated voltage boost circuitry enables a 12V or 24V nominal solar array to efficiently charge a 36V system. This capability solves a critical challenge in mobile and remote installations where space constraints or existing panel configurations would otherwise prevent effective charging.

Designed and manufactured in the USA, the GVB-8-WP series is trusted in demanding environments including marine, RV, golf cart, street lighting, and industrial off-grid systems. Its fully encapsulated, IP68 waterproof construction protects against moisture, dust, and vibration, ensuring long-term reliability in harsh conditions.

True MPPT Performance with 15 Hz Tracking Speed

At the core of the controller is a true Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm operating at 15 Hz. This ultra-fast tracking speed allows the controller to continuously adapt to changing light conditions, extracting maximum available power from the solar array. Unlike “nominal MPPT” controllers that approximate the maximum power point, Genasun’s implementation delivers consistent, high-efficiency energy harvest throughout the day. This is particularly beneficial during intermittent cloud cover, dawn, dusk, and shaded conditions where slower controllers often underperform.

With a peak electrical efficiency of 99% and typical operating efficiency between 96% and 98%, the GVB-8-Pb-36V-WP minimises conversion losses, ensuring more of the collected solar energy reaches the battery. This high efficiency reduces heat buildup within the controller, contributing to its wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

Engineered for Harsh Environments

The controller’s electronics are encased in a proprietary potting compound, providing complete protection against water ingress, salt spray, and corrosive atmospheres. This IP68-rated waterproof design makes it suitable for marine deck mounting, vehicle underbody installation, and outdoor pole-mounted applications where exposure to the elements is unavoidable. The integrated mounting flanges allow secure attachment to flat surfaces, while the pre-stripped 16 AWG tinned flying leads simplify wiring.

An in-line 10A fuse is included for overcurrent protection, and the multicolour LED status indicator provides at-a-glance feedback on charging state, battery full, and error conditions. The wiring guide printed directly on the housing reduces installation errors and speeds up commissioning.

Optimised Multi-Stage Charging for Lead-Acid Batteries

The GVB-8-Pb-36V-WP employs a multi-stage charging profile with automatic temperature compensation to maximise battery life and performance. The profile includes:

  • Bulk charge at 43.2V for rapid energy recovery
  • Absorption charge at 42.6V for 2 hours to ensure full saturation
  • Float charge at 41.4V to maintain the battery without overcharging
  • Re-bulk at 37.5V to restart the charge cycle when the battery voltage drops

Temperature compensation adjusts the charge voltages at -84 mV/°C (referred to 25°C), preventing overcharge in high temperatures and undercharge in cold conditions. This precise regulation is essential for flooded, AGM, and gel lead-acid batteries commonly used in off-grid and mobile applications.

Ideal Applications

The GVB-8-Pb-36V-WP is purpose-built for systems where a 36V lead-acid battery bank must be charged from a lower-voltage solar array. Typical use cases include:

  • Electric golf carts and utility vehicles with 36V battery systems and limited roof space for panels
  • Marine and RV installations where existing 12V or 24V panels need to charge a 36V house or propulsion bank
  • Off-grid industrial equipment such as remote monitoring stations, telemetry systems, and street lighting
  • Military and field-deployable systems requiring rugged, waterproof power electronics

With a maximum recommended panel power of 325W and an input voltage range of 0-60V, the controller can accommodate a wide variety of solar modules. The minimum input voltage for charging is just 5V, enabling energy harvest even in very low-light conditions.

Reliable Power Conversion for Critical Systems

By eliminating the need to match panel voltage to battery voltage, the Genasun GVB-8-Pb-36V-WP reduces system design complexity and expands panel selection options. Its robust construction and advanced MPPT algorithm ensure dependable performance in applications where failure is not an option. Whether you are upgrading a golf cart charging system, building a marine solar array, or deploying remote off-grid equipment, this controller provides the efficiency and durability required for long-term operation.
