Balmar Duo Charge DDC-12/24 Regulator

DESCRIPTION

Automated Solid-State Dual Battery Combiner for 12V and 24V Systems

The Balmar Digital Duo Charge (DDC-12/24) delivers a sophisticated, hands-off solution for managing and charging two distinct battery banks without relying on diode isolators, mechanical relays, or manual selector switches. Engineered for demanding marine, RV, and off-grid electrical architectures, this solid-state battery combiner actively monitors voltage at the primary house bank and seamlessly directs up to 30A of regulated charge current to the auxiliary or starting battery.

In dual-battery installations, managing charge distribution between a heavily cycled house bank and a dedicated engine start battery is critical. Standard diode isolators often introduce significant voltage drop, while basic voltage-sensitive relays cannot regulate voltage for mixed battery chemistries. The DDC-12/24 resolves these issues as a solid-state battery combiner that controls voltage and current between your house and start batteries.

Intelligent Voltage and Current Management

During charging cycles, the unit monitors the house battery voltage. Once the voltage exceeds the minimum threshold (typically 13.2V in a 12V system or 26.4V in a 24V system), the Digital Duo Charge automatically engages. When the charging source is removed, the unit immediately isolates the banks, eliminating the risk of accidentally discharging your starting battery into the house loads.

  • Solid-State Reliability: Replaces moving mechanical relays and inefficient diode isolators with durable solid-state electronics.
  • Mixed Chemistry Support: Safely charges a starting battery of a different chemistry than the house bank, supporting four distinct charging profiles: Standard Flooded, Deep Cycle Flooded, AGM, and Gel Cell.
  • Dual-Voltage Flexibility: Operates in either 12V or 24V DC electrical systems.
  • Up to 30A Output: Provides substantial charge current to replenish the starting battery, with an optional solenoid control when higher start battery charging output is required.
  • Standalone or Integrated Operation: Designed to work in concert with Balmar Max Charge or ARS-5 alternator regulators, and it can also be used without a Balmar regulator.
  • Thermal Protection Ready: Supports optional start battery temperature sensing when paired with the Balmar MC-TS-B sensor cable (sold separately) to prevent overcharging in extreme engine room environments.

Solving Mixed-Chemistry Charging Challenges

Modern power systems frequently pair high-capacity deep-cycle house banks with traditional lead-acid or AGM starting batteries. Connecting these dissimilar banks directly together via a standard relay exposes the start battery to the higher absorption voltages required by deep-cycle banks, leading to premature gassing and reduced service life. By offering selectable start-battery programs, the Balmar Duo Charge tailors the output to the needs of the start battery, protecting your investment and ensuring reliable engine cranking.

Versatile Marine and Mobile Applications

Whether upgrading a marine vessel's alternator charging system or fitting out an expedition vehicle, the DDC-12/24 simplifies wiring and removes human error from battery management. Where more than 30A of start battery charging is required, the optional solenoid control enables higher charging output.
