Balmar 12V 120A 60 Series Alternator, 4in Saddle Mount, Isolated Ground (No Pulley)
Balmar 12V 120A 60 Series Alternator, 4in Saddle Mount, Isolated Ground (No Pulley)
High-Output Marine & Off-Grid Charging - Suits 17mm Bore Pulleys

DESCRIPTION
High-Output 60 Series 12V 120A Isolated Ground Alternator
Built for recreational marine and mobile power applications, the 60 Series 12V 120A Alternator delivers reliable, high-output charging performance. Designed with a 4-inch (approx. 101.6mm) J-180-style saddle mount configuration (Balmar 604 Series), this high-output unit provides a significant upgrade over standard factory alternators, ensuring your auxiliary battery banks and essential onboard electronics remain adequately charged during operation.
Whether you are outfitting a cruising vessel or upgrading an off-grid expedition vehicle, this 120A alternator is a compact, high-output charging upgrade. Please note that this unit is supplied without a pulley, allowing you to select the exact drive configuration required for your specific engine setup.
Why Choose an Isolated Ground Alternator?
In marine environments, electrical integrity is critical. Unlike standard case-grounded units that use the engine block as a return path, this alternator features an isolated ground design. By keeping the negative electrical return completely separate from the alternator housing and engine block, it significantly reduces the risk of stray current corrosion and galvanic damage to metal hulls, propellers, and submerged fittings. It also minimises electrical interference with sensitive navigation and communication equipment.
Key Features and Benefits
- High 120A Output at 12V: Provides substantial charging current to rapidly replenish deep-cycle house and starting batteries, and LiFePO4 banks when paired with a Balmar Max Charge regulator that has a lithium program (the ARS-5 is not for lithium).
- Isolated Ground Architecture: Suited to metal-hulled marine vessels, helping prevent stray current corrosion and ground loops.
- 4-Inch (Approx. 101.6mm) Saddle Mount: Built to fit J-180-style dual-foot mounting brackets, typical for Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit Diesel and John Deere engines.
- Customisable Drive Interface: Supplied without a pulley to accommodate custom belt ratios and specific engine belt profiles, from traditional V-belts to modern multi-rib serpentine systems.
- Dual Fan Cooling: Compact, small-case 6-Series design with dual fan cooling and a high airflow frame.
Compatible Pulley Options (Sold Separately)
Because engine drive systems vary widely across marine engines, this alternator is supplied bare of a pulley. It accepts 17mm bore pulleys in the following configurations:
- B-61-0020: Pulley, Dual V 2.7" (approx. 68.6mm) x 1/2" (approx. 12.7mm) Deep V, 17mm Bore
- B-61-0070: Pulley, K-6 2.45" (approx. 62.2mm) Serpentine 6-Rib, 17mm Bore
- B-1310: Pulley, K-8 2.4" (approx. 61mm) Serpentine 8-Rib, 17mm Bore, Short (Standard)
Designed for Recreational Applications
Standard alternators are typically designed to maintain a single starting battery and run basic vehicle loads. Balmar designs its 6-Series alternators for recreational applications and describes them as ideal for modest charging upgrades. Its Smart Ready internal regulator may be sufficient where battery loads are relatively small and the engine runs frequently. For larger deep-cycle battery banks, or where the engine runs less often (as on most sailing vessels), pair it with a Balmar ARS-5 or Max Charge multi-stage regulator.
Configure your ideal charging system today. Select the appropriate pulley from the options above to match your engine's belt drive and upgrade your vessel or vehicle with dependable 12V power generation.
