Blue Sea VSM 24in Petrol Ultrasonic Tank Sender
Blue Sea VSM 24in Petrol Ultrasonic Tank Sender
Non-Contact Sensing with Digital Slosh Filtering for VSM 422 (PN 1800)

DESCRIPTION
Reliable Non-Contact Ultrasonic Petrol Level Sensing for VSM 422
Monitoring fuel levels accurately in a dynamic marine or mobile environment presents unique challenges. The Blue Sea Systems 1811B Ultrasonic Tank Sender provides a solid-state solution for tracking petrol levels in tanks up to 24 in (approx. 610mm) deep. By utilising advanced acoustic wave technology, this sender measures the distance to the fuel surface without making physical contact with the volatile liquid.
Traditional mechanical float switches and resistive swing-arm senders are prone to physical degradation, corrosion, and jamming over time. Because the Blue Sea ultrasonic sensor contains no moving mechanical parts, it removes the primary cause of intermittent signal loss and premature sender failure in marine fuel systems.
Engineered for Dynamic Marine Environments
Vessel movement, wave action, and vehicle vibration cause fuel to slosh continuously, which often results in erratic gauge readings on standard analogue setups. This unit incorporates intelligent digital filtering designed to smooth out transient spikes caused by liquid movement, delivering a stable and dependable fuel volume reading to your helm or control panel.
Constructed for durability, the sender features a standard 5-hole mounting pattern accompanied by a fuel-tight sealing gasket to prevent vapour escape and moisture ingress. The three-wire harness exits through a moulded, integrated strain relief, protecting the internal electronics from constant engine vibration and cable tension.
Key Features and Benefits
- Non-Contact Ultrasonic Technology: Measures fuel depth acoustically with zero submerged or moving parts, eliminating mechanical wear and tear.
- Integrated Digital Filtering: Compensates for liquid sloshing in mobile and marine tanks to prevent erratic level readings.
- Dedicated VSM 422 Calibration: Factory-calibrated specifically for seamless integration with the Blue Sea Vessel Systems Monitor VSM 422 (PN 1800).
- Petrol Specific Design: Tuned specifically for the acoustic properties and vapour environment of petrol fuel tanks up to 24 in (approx. 610mm) in depth.
- Robust Marine Construction: Includes a 5-hole flange, sealing gasket, and moulded wiring strain relief for long-term mechanical and electrical integrity.
Important Compatibility and Exclusions
To ensure reliable system integration, please verify your existing monitoring hardware before purchasing. This sender is strictly calibrated for the Blue Sea Vessel Systems Monitor VSM 422 (PN 1800) and will not function with third-party gauges, NMEA 2000 networks, or other Blue Sea monitor models. Additionally, this model (BS-1811B) is calibrated exclusively for petrol tanks and is not suitable for diesel, water, or blackwater holding tanks.
Installation and Tank Geometry Requirements
Ultrasonic sensors rely on clean acoustic reflections from the liquid surface back to the transducer. For accurate operation, the tank and mounting location must meet specific geometric criteria:
- Tank Depth and Floor: Suitable for tanks with a maximum depth of 24 in (approx. 610mm). The bottom of the tank must be flat and level, as a sloped floor will deflect the ultrasonic beam away from the sensor.
- Perpendicular Orientation: The sender must be mounted on the top of the tank, strictly perpendicular to the surface of the liquid.
- Internal Clearance: Position the mounting hole at least 4 in (approx. 102mm) away from any internal tank walls, weld seams, pickup tubes, or baffles to prevent false acoustic echoes.
- Electrical Grounding: For optimal signal integrity, connect the negative wire of the three-wire harness as directly as possible to the main negative bus bar.
Upgrade your vessel's fuel management system with solid-state reliability. Ensure your tank meets the installation criteria and pair the Blue Sea 1811B Ultrasonic Sender with your VSM 422 monitor for precise petrol level tracking on the water.
