Blue Sea 90A 187-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 90A 187-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Ignition Protected, Trip-Free Design with 5/16" (M8) Terminal Studs

DESCRIPTION
Integrated 90A DC Switching and Thermal Circuit Protection
The Blue Sea 187-Series 90A Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers reliable overcurrent protection and manual switching in a single, heavy-duty unit. Engineered for demanding marine, RV, and off-grid DC electrical systems, this component eliminates the need to wire a separate switch and fuse holder. By consolidating two critical functions into one compact footprint, it streamlines panel layouts, reduces potential failure points, and simplifies complex wiring installations.
Fail-Safe Trip-Free Mechanism
Electrical safety in high-current DC systems requires uncompromising reliability. This 187-Series breaker features an advanced trip-free mechanism, meaning the internal contacts cannot be manually held in the closed (ON) position during an active fault condition. Unlike lower-grade alternatives that may allow an operator to force a circuit live during a short or overload, the Blue Sea design automatically overrides manual input until the fault is cleared and the thermal element cools. This vital safety feature significantly reduces the risk of overheated wiring, damaged electronics, and electrical fires.
Engineered for Harsh Marine and Automotive Environments
Designed specifically to withstand moisture, vibration, and volatile environments, this circuit breaker is fully ignition protected. It is safe for installation aboard petrol-powered boats, within engine compartments, and near battery banks where flammable gases may accumulate. The waterproof mounting holes and robust housing protect internal components from moisture ingress, ensuring dependable operation in coastal and off-road applications.
To handle substantial 90A continuous loads without voltage drop or excessive heat generation, the unit is equipped with heavy-duty 5/16" (Approx. M8) terminal studs. These large terminals easily accommodate heavy-gauge cable lugs and support high-torque connections, preventing loose wiring caused by vessel or vehicle vibration.
Key Features and Benefits
- Dual Functionality: Combines manual ON/OFF circuit switching with precision 90A thermal overcurrent protection.
- Trip-Free Safety Design: Cannot be held in the ON position while a fault current is present, protecting downstream cabling and equipment.
- Ignition Protected: Safe for installation in compartments on petrol-powered vessels and around vented battery enclosures.
- Heavy-Duty Terminations: Robust 5/16" (Approx. M8) studs accept large ring terminals and allow for secure, high-torque connections.
- Clean Panel Integration: Recessed mounting holes provide a neat, professional finish on switchboards and distribution panels.
- Clear Visual Status: The high-visibility yellow reset lever can be mounted vertically or horizontally and clearly indicates when the breaker has tripped.
- Weather-Resistant Build: Waterproof mounting holes help maintain enclosure integrity in damp marine or mobile environments.
Application Notes and Limitations
While the 187-Series is built for heavy-duty circuit protection and manual isolation, do not use this breaker as a regular switch where high inrush currents are expected. Repeatedly switching loads with massive startup surges under load can prematurely wear the internal contacts. It is ideally suited for main DC feed protection, windlasses, bow thrusters, high-output inverters, and auxiliary battery systems in caravans, 4WDs, and marine vessels.
Upgrade Your DC Electrical Protection
Ensure your vessel or off-grid power system is protected against dangerous overloads and short circuits. Integrate the Blue Sea 187-Series 90A Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker into your distribution panel for professional-grade safety and reliable manual circuit control.
