Blue Sea 80A 187-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 80A 187-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Up to 48V DC | Ignition Protected & Weatherproof | 5/16" (M8) Studs

DESCRIPTION
Heavy-Duty 80A DC Circuit Protection and Switching for Marine and Off-Grid Systems
The Blue Sea 187-Series 80A Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers reliable overcurrent protection and manual switching in a single, robust unit. Engineered for demanding 12V, 24V, and up to 48V DC electrical systems, this breaker is an essential component for safeguarding high-draw circuits in marine vessels, caravans, 4WDs, and off-grid solar installations. Unlike standard fuse holders that require spare parts after a fault, this resettable 80A thermal breaker allows you to quickly restore power once the underlying electrical issue is resolved, while also functioning as a convenient master disconnect switch for maintenance or storage.
Engineered for Harsh Marine and Automotive Environments
When working with high-amperage DC systems, inferior circuit protection can lead to high-resistance connections, voltage drop, and severe thermal hazards. The Blue Sea Systems 187-Series mitigates these risks through marine-grade engineering and robust materials. Featuring an ignition-protected housing, it is safe for installation in enclosed compartments and engine rooms aboard petrol-powered boats where volatile fumes may accumulate. Its weatherproof construction seals out moisture, salt spray, and dust, preventing internal corrosion that commonly causes lower-grade breakers to fail prematurely in Australian coastal and outback conditions.
Key Features and Benefits
- Integrated Switching and Protection: Combines an 80A thermal circuit breaker and a manual ON/OFF switch into a single device, simplifying panel layouts and reducing wiring complexity.
- Trip-Free Mechanism: Designed for uncompromising safety, the internal mechanism cannot be manually held in the ON position while a fault current is present, preventing severe cable damage and electrical fires.
- Heavy-Duty Terminal Studs: Equipped with robust 5/16 in (Approx. M8) terminal studs that support high-torque connections and provide ample clearance for heavy-gauge wire lugs.
- Weatherproof and Ignition Protected: Built to withstand harsh marine and off-grid environments, making it suitable for installation in damp locations and petrol engine bays.
- High-Visibility Reset Lever: The large yellow actuator clearly indicates trip status at a glance and is ergonomically shaped for easy manual operation, even with gloved hands.
- Clean Panel Integration: Features recessed mounting holes for a flush, professional finish on dashboards, switchboards, and custom power distribution panels, with support for vertical or horizontal orientation.
Versatile Applications and Installation Considerations
Rated for systems up to 48V DC maximum, this 80A panel mount breaker is ideal for protecting main DC feeder lines, auxiliary battery banks, windlasses, bow thrusters, and high-output charge controllers. The ample clearance around the 5/16 in (Approx. M8) studs ensures that thick battery cables and heavy-duty lugs can be terminated securely without crowding or straining the housing.
Important Application Note: Do not use this thermal circuit breaker as a frequent manual switch for loads where high inrush currents are expected (such as large inverters without pre-charge circuits), as repeated high-inrush switching can degrade the internal contacts over time. It is specifically designed for continuous circuit protection and occasional isolation switching.
