Blue Sea 70A 285-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 70A 285-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
48V DC Max | SAE J1171 Ignition Protected | Trip-Free Manual Reset

DESCRIPTION
Reliable 70A DC Overcurrent Protection and Switching for Marine and Off-Grid Systems
The Blue Sea 285-Series 70A Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers dependable circuit protection and manual switching in a single, compact unit. Engineered specifically for demanding marine, RV, caravan, and 4WD electrical installations, this heavy-duty breaker eliminates the need for separate inline fuse holders and isolation switches. Supporting DC electrical systems up to a maximum of 48V DC, it is equally suited for standard 12V and 24V battery banks as well as higher-voltage off-grid setups.
Whether you are protecting auxiliary battery systems, solar charge controllers, or distribution panels, the 285-Series provides an easy-to-manage alternative to replaceable fuses. When an overload occurs, the thermal mechanism responds accurately to protect your wiring harness and connected appliances from thermal damage.
Key Features and Benefits
- Dual Functionality: Combines 70A continuous overcurrent protection with manual on/off switching to streamline your electrical layout.
- SAE J1171 Ignition Protected: Certified safe for installation aboard petrol-powered boats and inside enclosed engine compartments or battery boxes.
- Trip-Free Design: Internal mechanism ensures the breaker cannot be manually held closed during an active fault or overcurrent condition, prioritising system safety.
- Clear Status Indication: Features a high-visibility yellow reset lever that drops down to clearly show when a circuit has tripped, alongside a recessed red push-to-trip button for manual circuit disconnection.
- Weather-Resistant Construction: Built to withstand harsh marine environments, moisture, and vibration where lower-grade breakers might corrode or fail prematurely.
- Multi-Voltage Compatibility: Rated for systems up to 48V DC, making it versatile for 12V automotive setups, 24V commercial vehicles, and 48V off-grid power architectures.
Engineered for Safety in Harsh Environments
In marine and mobile environments, electrical components are constantly exposed to moisture, salt spray, and vibration. Standard circuit breakers often suffer from nuisance tripping or internal corrosion under these conditions. The Blue Sea 285-Series features weather-resistant housing and robust internal contacts designed to maintain continuity and accurate trip thresholds over long service lives.
Compliance with SAE J1171 ignition protection standards means this unit will not ignite surrounding flammable gases if a spark occurs internally during a trip event. This makes it an essential safety component when mounting near fuel tanks, bilge areas, or poorly ventilated lead-acid battery enclosures.
Intuitive Operation and System Integration
Troubleshooting electrical faults in dimly lit lockers or engine bays is simplified by the tactile yellow reset lever. When the red test button is pressed or an overcurrent event triggers the thermal element, the lever swings open to provide immediate visual confirmation of an open circuit. Once the fault is cleared, flipping the lever back restores power instantly without searching for spare fuses.
Designed for flush panel mounting, the unit integrates cleanly into custom switchboards or main distribution hubs using its pre-drilled mounting holes. Please note an important operational exclusion: do not use this thermal circuit breaker as a frequent manual switch where high inrush currents are expected (such as direct switching of heavy motor loads or large inverter capacitor banks without pre-charge), as repeated high-inrush switching can degrade the contacts over time.
Upgrade Your Electrical Protection
Ensure your vessel, caravan, or off-grid power system is safeguarded against electrical faults with industry-standard components. Select the Blue Sea 285-Series 70A Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker for safe, resettable protection across your 12V, 24V, or 48V DC distribution setup.
