Blue Sea 70A 187-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 70A 187-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
12V-48V DC Switching & Protection - Ignition Protected - M8 Studs

DESCRIPTION
Heavy-Duty DC Circuit Protection and Manual Switching for Marine and Off-Grid Systems
The Blue Sea 187-Series 70A Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers dual-function capability by combining reliable overcurrent protection and manual circuit switching into a single, compact device. Designed for demanding electrical environments, this 70A circuit breaker eliminates the need for separate switches and fuse holders, streamlining your electrical board while saving valuable installation space. Whether you are outfitting a commercial vessel, upgrading a 4WD dual-battery system, or building an off-grid caravan power setup, the 187-Series provides dependable management for high-amperage DC loads.
Engineered to handle systems up to a maximum voltage rating of 48V DC, this unit is highly versatile and suitable for 12V, 24V, and 48V battery banks. The recessed mounting holes and flush panel-mount profile ensure a clean, professional finish on dashboards, control panels, and inside power distribution enclosures.
Engineered for Safety: Trip-Free and Ignition Protected
In high-current DC systems, equipment failure or short circuits can present significant hazards. The Blue Sea 187-Series mitigates these risks through a dedicated trip-free mechanism. This critical safety feature ensures the internal contacts cannot be manually held in the closed (ON) position while a fault current condition persists, protecting your wiring harness and connected appliances from thermal damage.
Furthermore, this marine circuit breaker is certified ignition protected. It is specifically sealed to prevent internal sparks from igniting surrounding flammable gases, making it safe for installation in the engine rooms of petrol-powered boats or near battery compartments and gas cylinders in RVs and camper trailers.
Key Features and Benefits
- Dual-Function Design: Combines heavy-duty 70A overcurrent protection and manual ON/OFF switching in one integrated unit.
- High-Visibility Status Lever: The single yellow reset lever clearly indicates the trip status and can be mounted vertically or horizontally for intuitive operation.
- Heavy-Gauge Terminal Clearance: Equipped with robust 5/16" (Approx. M8) stud terminals that support high-torque connections and provide ample clearance for large wire lugs.
- Trip-Free Safety Mechanism: Prevents the breaker from being forced or held on during an active electrical fault.
- Ignition Protected: Safe for installation aboard petrol-powered marine vessels and enclosed utility spaces.
- Multi-Voltage Compatibility: Rated up to 48V DC maximum, easily supporting standard 12V, 24V, and 48V DC electrical architectures.
Built to Outperform Standard Breakers
Many standard thermal breakers suffer from voltage drop, loose connections, and premature tripping due to inferior internal components and undersized studs. The Blue Sea Systems 187-Series overcomes these common issues with heavy-duty 5/16" (Approx. M8) terminal studs that accommodate heavy-gauge cables without crowding. The self-trimming case and clean bezel layout provide a refined aesthetic while resisting moisture and corrosion in harsh coastal and off-road environments.
Important Application Note: Do not use this circuit breaker as a manual switch where high inrush currents are expected, as repeated switching under heavy surge loads can degrade the internal contacts over time.
Ideal Applications
- Main circuit protection for 12V, 24V, and 48V auxiliary battery systems in 4WDs, caravans, and motorhomes
- Marine power distribution panels and petrol engine bay installations
- Protecting high-draw DC appliances, inverter chargers, and DC-DC chargers
- Isolating solar charge controllers or auxiliary sub-panels for safe maintenance
