Blue Sea 60A 285-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 60A 285-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
SAE J1171 Ignition Protected, Weather-Resistant & Trip-Free Switching

DESCRIPTION
Heavy-Duty DC Overcurrent Protection and Switching for Harsh Environments
Managing high-current DC systems requires dependable overcurrent protection that will not fail when exposed to moisture, vibration, or extreme temperatures. The Blue Sea 285-Series 60A Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers dual-functionality by combining precise thermal circuit protection with convenient manual on-off switching in a single, compact housing. Designed as a direct, modern drop-in replacement for older 185-Series breakers, this unit simplifies electrical panel layouts across marine vessels, 4WD canopy setups, caravans, and off-grid solar installations.
Engineered for Marine Safety and Reliability
Unlike standard automotive breakers that can corrode rapidly or pose hazards in enclosed compartments, the 285-Series is purpose-built for demanding environments. It is fully ignition protected and compliant with SAE J1171 external ignition protection requirements, making it safe for installation aboard petrol-powered boats and within battery compartments where explosive gases may accumulate. The weather-resistant casing shields internal components from dust and water spray, ensuring consistent performance in exposed mounting locations.
Intuitive Operation and Trip-Free Security
Troubleshooting electrical faults in poorly lit lockers or under vehicle bonnets is straightforward thanks to the high-visibility yellow reset lever, which drops down to provide an immediate visual indication when a circuit has tripped. To manually isolate the circuit for maintenance or storage, simply press the red trip button. For critical system safety, the internal trip-free mechanism ensures the breaker cannot be manually held in the closed position while an overcurrent fault persists, actively preventing wire damage and reducing the risk of electrical fires.
- Dual Functionality: Combines 60A thermal overcurrent protection and manual circuit switching into one unit, reducing the need for separate battery switches.
- SAE J1171 Ignition Protected: Certified safe for installation in petrol engine rooms and enclosed battery boxes.
- Trip-Free Design: Internal mechanism trips independently of the lever, preventing the circuit from being forced closed during an active fault.
- Clear Visual Status: Features a high-visibility yellow reset lever and red manual trip button for rapid fault identification and circuit testing.
- Integrated Terminal Insulation: Equipped with stainless steel terminal studs for high-current DC connections and fitted rubber protective caps to prevent accidental short circuits.
- Weather-Resistant Construction: Sealed housing resists moisture and salt spray in coastal and marine applications.
Application Considerations and Installation
This surface-mount breaker features robust mounting holes for secure attachment to bulkheads, distribution panels, or battery enclosures. The integrated rubber terminal boots fold securely over the stainless steel studs, protecting your cable lugs against accidental bridging from dropped tools or shifting gear. Please note a specific operational exclusion: do not use this breaker as a manual switch where high inrush currents are expected, as repeated switching under heavy surge loads can prematurely wear the internal contacts.
Secure Your High-Current DC Electrical System
Whether you are wiring a dual-battery system in a touring 4WD, protecting a marine windlass, or safeguarding main distribution feeds in an off-grid caravan, the Blue Sea 285-Series 60A breaker provides professional-grade reliability. Upgrade your electrical architecture today for safer, compliant, and easily manageable circuit protection.
