Blue Sea 60A 187-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker

DESCRIPTION

Integrated Circuit Protection and Manual Switching for Harsh Environments

The Blue Sea Systems 187-Series 60A Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker combines heavy-duty circuit protection and manual switching into a single, robust unit. Engineered for demanding marine, automotive, and off-grid electrical systems, this device streamlines wiring configurations by eliminating the need for separate inline fuses and isolation switches. Supporting systems up to 48V DC, it is well-suited for 12V, 24V, and 48V battery banks, auxiliary distribution panels, and high-draw DC appliances.

Safety-First Design and Ignition Protection

When working around marine engine compartments, fuel tanks, or battery enclosures, safety is paramount. This thermal circuit breaker meets strict SAE J1171 external ignition protection requirements, making it safe for installation aboard petrol-powered boats and in enclosed vehicle spaces where flammable gases may accumulate. Unlike standard unsealed switches that risk sparking, this unit contains internal electrical arcs safely within its waterproof housing.

Additionally, the internal mechanism features a trip-free design. In the event of an overcurrent fault or short circuit, the breaker will trip and cannot be manually held in the ON position until the fault is cleared. This vital safety feature prevents wiring damage, melted insulation, and potential electrical fires caused by operator error or forced overrides.

Engineered for Heavy-Duty Cabling and Durability

Inferior circuit breakers often suffer from undersized studs that strip under torque or fail to accommodate thick cable lugs, leading to high resistance and dangerous heat build-up. The 187-Series resolves this by incorporating robust 5/16" (Approx. M8) stainless steel terminals. These heavy-duty studs provide ample clearance and high-torque capability for large-gauge wire lugs, ensuring low-resistance connections that withstand severe vibration in 4WD, caravan, and marine applications.

The rugged thermoset polyester case is completely waterproof and features recessed mounting holes for a clean, professional surface installation. A large, high-visibility yellow reset lever provides an immediate visual indication of the circuit status, allowing you to quickly identify a tripped circuit or manually isolate power during system maintenance.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Dual Functionality: Combines reliable 60A thermal overcurrent protection with convenient manual ON/OFF switching in one compact footprint.
  • SAE J1171 Ignition Protected: Safe for installation in petrol engine rooms and battery compartments, reducing the risk of vapour ignition.
  • Trip-Free Mechanism: Ensures the circuit cannot be forced closed during an active fault condition, protecting expensive downstream electronics and cabling.
  • Heavy-Duty Terminals: Equipped with 5/16" (Approx. M8) stainless steel studs to securely accept heavy-gauge ring terminals without crowding.
  • Waterproof Construction: Sealed housing resists moisture ingress, salt spray, and dust in exposed marine and off-road environments.
  • Wide Voltage Compatibility: Rated for up to 48V DC maximum, offering versatility across 12V, 24V, and 48V DC electrical architectures.

Application Considerations and Limitations

This 60A thermal breaker is ideal for protecting main feed lines, windlasses, bow thrusters, DC-DC chargers, and solar charge controller outputs. While it excels as a manual isolation switch and circuit protector, please note that it is not intended for use as a frequent switch where high inrush currents are expected, such as directly switching large inverters without pre-charge circuits.

Upgrade Your Electrical Protection

Ensure your vessel, caravan, or off-grid power system is protected against overloads and short circuits. Integrate the Blue Sea 187-Series 60A Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker into your DC distribution setup for dependable, marine-grade circuit management.
