Blue Sea 50A 50mV DC Shunt
Blue Sea 50A 50mV DC Shunt
Brass Terminals & Insulating Base for Ammeters (33A Continuous)

DESCRIPTION
Precision DC Current Measurement for Marine and Off-Grid Electrical Systems
Accurate battery monitoring and load tracking are vital for maintaining the health and efficiency of any off-grid, caravan, or marine power setup. The Blue Sea 50A/50mV DC Shunt is engineered to work seamlessly with compatible analogue and digital DC ammeters, providing a highly calibrated voltage drop to measure real-time current flow. By diverting the heavy main load away from your sensitive dashboard gauges, this external shunt allows you to safely monitor charge and discharge currents without routing thick, high-amperage battery cables directly behind your instrument panel.
Engineered for Safety, Isolation, and Accuracy
Unlike unbranded alternatives that often lack proper thermal management or mounting security, this Blue Sea Systems component comes complete with an integrated black insulating base. This robust plastic base ensures secure electrical isolation when mounting the shunt onto conductive metal surfaces, bulkheads, or inside compact battery enclosures. It significantly reduces the risk of accidental short circuits while simplifying installation in tight spaces.
At the heart of the unit is a calibrated metal resistive element set between two heavy-duty brass terminal blocks. As current flows through the main load terminals, the resistive strip generates a proportional millivolt signal (1mV per 1A of current, reaching a 50mV drop at the full 50A rating). Your DC ammeter reads this precise signal via the dedicated sensing terminals, translating it into an accurate amperage reading on your display.
Key Features and Construction
- Calibrated 50A/50mV Ratio: Delivers a linear 50mV full-scale signal designed to pair effortlessly with compatible 50mV DC ammeters and battery monitors.
- Integrated Insulating Base: Features a durable black plastic mounting base that provides essential electrical isolation and mechanical stability on any flat surface.
- Heavy-Duty Brass Load Terminals: Equipped with robust hex bolts to secure main battery or load cables, ensuring low contact resistance and minimal heat build-up.
- Dedicated Sensing Screws: Includes separate Phillips head screws on top of the terminal blocks for quick, secure attachment of small-gauge ammeter voltage sensing leads.
- Clear Rating Identification: Marked clearly with its electrical specifications for straightforward system verification and meter pairing during installation or maintenance.
Continuous Operation and Thermal Management Guidance
To ensure long-term accuracy and prevent excessive thermal drift, it is important to size your shunt appropriately for your expected electrical loads. While this unit is rated for intermittent currents up to 50A, Blue Sea Systems recommends that continuous operation under normal conditions should not exceed two-thirds (66%) of the rated current, which equates to approximately 33A. Adhering to this continuous-use threshold prevents overheating of the resistive element, maintains measurement linearity, and protects surrounding wiring and terminals from heat stress.
Ideal Applications
This compact current shunt is well suited for a wide variety of low-to-medium amperage DC monitoring tasks across 12V, 24V, and 48V systems (when paired with an appropriately rated meter), including:
- Monitoring solar charge controller output in caravan, camper trailer, and 4WD dual-battery setups.
- Tracking specific DC branch circuits, such as refrigeration, lighting, or water pump loads on marine vessels.
- Replacing damaged or uncalibrated shunts in existing analogue or digital panel meter installations.
- Bench testing and DIY electrical diagnostics where safe, isolated current measurement is required.
