Blue Sea 50A/50mA AC Current Sensing Coil

DESCRIPTION

Precision AC Current Monitoring for Marine, Off-Grid, and Industrial Systems

Accurate monitoring of alternating current (AC) loads is critical for maintaining the safety and efficiency of any complex electrical system. Whether managing shore power on a marine vessel, monitoring inverter outputs in an off-grid caravan, or tracking machinery loads in an industrial switchboard, this 50A/50mA AC Current Sensing Coil provides a reliable, non-intrusive method for measuring current flow. Designed specifically to pair with compatible AC ammeters and digital monitoring displays, this current transformer steps down high primary currents into a safe, manageable signal for your instrumentation.

How Non-Invasive Toroidal Sensing Works

Traditional inline ammeters require breaking the main circuit to route heavy-gauge wiring directly through the meter, increasing installation complexity and introducing potential points of failure. A toroidal current sensing coil solves this by utilising electromagnetic induction. As alternating current flows through the primary conductor passing through the centre of the coil, it generates a magnetic field. The coil senses this field and produces a proportional 50mA secondary output signal when a 50A AC load is present.

Because the primary AC wire simply passes through the 0.60 in (15.24mm) inner diameter aperture without making direct electrical contact, the monitoring circuit remains completely isolated from high-voltage AC lines. This significantly reduces the risk of short circuits, voltage drops, and heat build-up behind your control panel.

Key Features and Technical Benefits

  • Galvanic Isolation: Safely separates high-voltage AC load wiring from sensitive dashboard gauges and monitoring panels, enhancing operator safety and system reliability.
  • 50A to 50mA Step-Down Ratio: Delivers a precise, linear 1000:1 signal reduction suitable for standard 50mA input AC ammeters and power monitors.
  • Pre-Wired Dual Leads: Supplied with integrated wire leads for straightforward connection to your measurement device, reducing termination time during fit-outs.
  • Compact Toroidal Footprint: With a 1.38 in (35.05mm) outside diameter, this sensor easily fits inside crowded distribution boards, inverter enclosures, and marine electrical cabinets.
  • Encapsulated Construction: The durable black housing protects the internal windings from vibration, dust, and incidental contact in mobile and harsh environments.

Why Upgrade from Standard Shunts or Inline Meters?

Unlike DC systems that rely on resistive shunts, AC systems benefit immensely from inductive current transformers. Standard low-grade sensors can suffer from core saturation, leading to inaccurate readings at peak loads or potential overheating. This purpose-built current transformer is engineered to maintain linearity across its rated 50A range, ensuring your energy management system receives dependable data. Accurate load tracking helps prevent overloaded shore power inlets, tripped circuit breakers, and overworked off-grid inverters.

Ideal Applications

  • Marine Electrical Panels: Monitor 230V AC shore power intake or onboard generator output on boats and yachts.
  • RV and Caravan Setups: Track high-draw AC appliances like air conditioners and induction cooktops running off inverters.
  • Off-Grid Solar and Battery Systems: Measure AC output loads from standalone inverters to optimise energy consumption.
  • Switchboards and Control Cabinets: Integrate into custom electrical enclosures for dedicated circuit monitoring.

Upgrade Your AC Power Visibility

Ensure your electrical distribution panel is equipped for safe, accurate load management. Integrate this 50A/50mA AC Current Sensing Coil with your compatible AC ammeter today for dependable, isolated current measurement across your marine, mobile, or off-grid power system.
