Blue Sea 50A 187-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 50A 187-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Ignition Protected & Weatherproof - 5/16" (M8) Studs - Trip-Free

DESCRIPTION
Heavy-Duty Switching and Overcurrent Protection for Marine and Off-Grid DC Systems
Managing moderate-to-high-current DC loads requires reliable hardware that can endure harsh, vibration-prone environments. The Blue Sea 187-Series 50A Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers dual-purpose functionality by combining manual circuit switching and precise thermal overcurrent protection into a single, robust unit. Engineered specifically for flush panel mounting, this component streamlines electrical distribution boards on marine vessels, 4WD dual-battery setups, caravans, and industrial off-grid systems by eliminating the need to wire separate isolation switches and fuse holders.
Engineered for Safety: Ignition Protection and Trip-Free Design
When working with enclosed battery compartments or engine bays, safety is paramount. This 187-Series breaker is fully ignition protected, meaning it is sealed to prevent internal electrical arcs from igniting external flammable vapours. This makes it compliant and safe for installation aboard petrol-powered boats and near ventilated battery enclosures.
In addition to its weatherproof housing, the breaker incorporates a trip-free internal mechanism. Unlike standard consumer-grade switches, a trip-free design ensures that the internal contacts cannot be manually held closed while an active fault current is present. If a short circuit or continuous overload occurs, the breaker will trip and remain disconnected until the fault is cleared, reducing the risk of cable overheating, insulation melt, or electrical fires. The large, high-visibility yellow reset lever provides an immediate visual indication of the circuit status and allows for straightforward manual operation even in dimly lit lockers.
Key Features and Technical Benefits
- Dual-Function Operation: Combines heavy-duty manual ON/OFF switching and automatic thermal circuit protection in one compact device.
- Ignition Protected Construction: Safe for installation in marine engine rooms, bilge areas, and compartments aboard petrol-powered vessels.
- Trip-Free Safety Mechanism: Prevents the user from forcing the circuit ON during an active overcurrent fault condition.
- Robust Terminal Hardware: Equipped with heavy-duty 5/16" (Approx. M8) stud terminals designed to support high-torque connections and accept large-gauge cable lugs.
- Weatherproof Housing: Sealed against moisture and salt spray ingress to ensure long-term reliability in coastal and mobile environments.
- Clear Visual Indication: Features a prominent yellow lever that clearly displays tripped or disconnected status at a glance.
Why Upgrade Over Standard Breakers?
Many entry-level thermal breakers suffer from undersized terminal studs, high internal resistance, and brittle housings that fail under thermal cycling or mechanical vibration. The Blue Sea 187-Series solves these common failure points by utilising marine-grade materials and substantial 5/16" (Approx. M8) terminal studs. These larger studs allow you to apply proper fastening torque without stripping threads, ensuring a low-resistance electrical connection that avoids voltage drop and localised heat build-up.
Application Guidelines and Exclusions
This 50A panel mount circuit breaker is well suited for protecting main DC feed wires, medium-duty winches, windlasses, DC-DC chargers, and sub-panel distribution feeds. To ensure optimal longevity of the internal contacts, do not use this breaker as a manual switch where high inrush currents are expected. It is designed to protect the wiring harness and act as a service disconnect rather than a continuous-duty load switch for high-surge inductive motors.
Secure Your Electrical Distribution
Equip your marine switchboard, camper trailer, or custom 12V/24V control panel with dependable overcurrent protection. Select the Blue Sea 187-Series 50A Panel Mount Circuit Breaker for a clean, compliant, and durable electrical installation.
