Blue Sea 500A/50mV DC Shunt
Blue Sea 500A/50mV DC Shunt
Solid Brass Blocks & Insulated Base - 330A Continuous Rating

DESCRIPTION
Precision DC Current Measurement for High-Capacity Electrical Systems
Accurate battery monitoring and load tracking are critical for the longevity and safety of any substantial off-grid, marine, or dual-battery electrical setup. The Blue Sea 500A/50mV DC Shunt is engineered to provide a highly reliable, proportional millivolt signal to compatible DC ammeters and battery monitors. By installing this external current shunt in line with your primary DC circuit, you can safely measure substantial electrical loads up to 500A without routing heavy-gauge battery cables directly to your dashboard or control panel.
Engineered for High Conductivity and Thermal Stability
When managing hundreds of amperes in a 12V, 24V, or 48V system, inferior components can introduce unwanted resistance, leading to inaccurate readings and dangerous heat build-up. This Blue Sea Systems shunt is built with two substantial, solid brass terminal blocks that offer exceptional electrical conductivity and act as natural heat sinks to dissipate thermal energy under heavy loads.
Between the brass blocks lies a precision-engineered resistive element composed of parallel plates. These plates are calibrated to maintain a stable, accurate resistance across varying current ranges, producing a full-scale 50mV drop at 500A. To ensure safe installation across a variety of surfaces, the entire metal assembly is mounted onto a reinforced black plastic insulated base, completely isolating the high-current path from your vessel bulkhead, caravan wall, or battery enclosure.
Key Features and Benefits
- 500A Rated Capacity with 50mV Output: Delivers a standard 10A per 1mV ratio, making it compatible with Blue Sea Systems digital and analogue ammeters as well as other industry-standard 50mV monitoring displays.
- Solid Brass Terminal Blocks: Maximises conductivity and aids in thermal management during high-demand cycles such as inverter operation or engine cranking.
- Heavy-Duty Connection Bolts: Equipped with large main terminal bolts and integrated spring washers to maintain clamping force on heavy battery lugs, reducing the risk of loose connections caused by vehicle or marine vibration.
- Dedicated Ammeter Sense Screws: Separate small terminal screws allow for the clean, direct attachment of twisted-pair sensing wires, isolating the measurement signal from the main load path for improved accuracy.
- Integrated Insulated Base: Prevents accidental short circuits against conductive mounting surfaces and simplifies physical installation inside electrical cabinets.
Application and Operational Sizing
This 500A current shunt is ideally suited for demanding applications including marine house banks, caravan inverter setups, 4WD canopy power systems, and off-grid solar storage. It allows system operators to observe both charging currents from alternators and solar controllers, as well as heavy discharge loads from inverters, winches, and bow thrusters.
For optimal thermal performance and long-term reliability during normal continuous operation, it is recommended that continuous loads do not exceed two-thirds (66%, or approximately 330A) of the 500A rated capacity. Adhering to this continuous-use guideline prevents excessive heat accumulation in the resistive plates, preserving calibration accuracy and protecting surrounding wiring insulation.
Upgrade Your System Monitoring Today
Take the guesswork out of your power management and protect your battery investment with reliable hardware. Add the Blue Sea 500A/50mV DC Shunt to your electrical system setup for dependable, accurate current tracking in demanding mobile and off-grid environments.
