Blue Sea 40A 285-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 40A 285-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
SAE J1171 Ignition Protected - M6 Stainless Terminals & On-Off Switch

DESCRIPTION
Reliable Overcurrent Protection and Manual Switching for Harsh Environments
Managing medium-current DC circuits requires hardware that can handle tough environmental conditions while maintaining strict safety standards. The Blue Sea 285-Series 40A Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers dual-purpose functionality by combining dependable overcurrent protection and manual on-off switching into a single, compact housing. Designed for marine, 4WD, caravan, and off-grid power systems, this unit simplifies electrical wiring by eliminating the need to install a separate fuse block and battery isolation switch for 40A loads.
Engineered for Marine and Petrol Engine Bay Safety
Unlike standard auto-parts store circuit breakers that can expose internal arcs to the surrounding atmosphere, this unit is fully compliant with SAE J1171 external ignition protection requirements. This makes it safe for installation aboard petrol-powered boats, within vehicle engine bays, and near battery compartments where explosive gases or fumes may accumulate. Furthermore, its weather-resistant casing shields the internal thermal mechanism from dust, moisture, and salt spray, significantly reducing the risk of premature failure in coastal or off-road conditions.
Key Features and Hardware Benefits
- Dual-Function Design: Combines 40A thermal circuit protection with convenient manual on-off switching in one compact unit.
- SAE J1171 Ignition Protected: Sealed against external arcing, allowing safe installation in petrol engine compartments and marine bilges.
- Trip-Free Mechanism: Enhances system safety by ensuring the breaker cannot be manually held closed during an active fault or overload condition.
- High-Visibility Status Indication: Features a recessed red push-to-trip button for manual disconnection and a drop-down yellow reset lever that clearly indicates when the circuit is open.
- Corrosion-Resistant M6 Terminals: Equipped with stainless steel hardware to ensure high-conductivity connections that resist seizing and voltage drop over time.
- Insulating Terminal Caps Included: Supplied with fitted rubber protective boots that slide over your cable lugs to prevent accidental short circuits against nearby conductive surfaces.
Why Upgrade to the Blue Sea 285-Series?
Inferior circuit breakers often suffer from nuisance tripping, rusted studs, and fragile reset levers that snap after minimal use. The 285-Series addresses these common failure points with robust housing materials and precision-calibrated thermal tripping elements. The integrated surface-mount holes allow for straightforward, secure attachment to flat panels, firewalls, or battery boxes, while the M6 terminal studs accommodate standard ring terminals for clean cable management.
Application and Operating Notes
This 40A thermal breaker is well-suited for protecting auxiliary battery feeds, DC distribution panels, solar charge controller outputs, and medium-draw appliances in 12V and 24V DC electrical systems. Please note that while the unit functions as an on-off disconnect switch for maintenance and storage, it should not be used for frequent switching of loads where high inrush currents are expected, as this can accelerate contact wear. Additionally, the internal trip-free design ensures that if a short circuit persists, the yellow lever will not re-engage until the fault is cleared.
Secure Your DC Electrical System
Upgrade your marine, caravan, or 4WD wiring with professional-grade overcurrent protection. Add the Blue Sea 285-Series 40A circuit breaker to your setup today for dependable, compliant power management.
