Blue Sea 30A 285-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 30A 285-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
SAE J1171 Ignition Protected, Weather-Resistant & Trip-Free Design

DESCRIPTION
Heavy-Duty 30A Circuit Protection and Switching for Marine and Off-Grid Systems
The Blue Sea 285-Series 30A Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers dependable overcurrent protection and manual switching in a single, compact unit. Engineered specifically for harsh marine, RV, and off-grid electrical environments, this weather-resistant breaker protects your critical wiring and appliances from thermal overload and short circuits. Unlike standard fuses that require replacement parts after a fault, this resettable thermal breaker allows you to restore power quickly once the underlying electrical issue is resolved, reducing system downtime when travelling remotely or offshore.
Certified Ignition Protection for Marine Safety
When installing electrical components in enclosed spaces or aboard petrol-powered vessels, safety compliance is critical. The 285-Series is fully ignition protected and meets rigorous SAE J1171 external ignition protection requirements. This specialised construction prevents internal electrical arcs from igniting surrounding flammable gases or fuel vapours, making it safe for installation in marine engine compartments, bilge areas, and battery enclosures. Upgrading to an SAE J1171 compliant breaker significantly reduces fire risks compared to non-certified alternatives.
Intuitive Operation and Trip-Free Design
Designed for straightforward operation and rapid fault diagnosis, this unit combines circuit protection with convenient manual disconnect functionality. It features a prominent red push-to-trip button, allowing you to manually isolate the circuit for routine maintenance or emergency shutdowns. When an overcurrent event occurs, the high-visibility yellow reset lever drops down to clearly indicate the open condition, taking the guesswork out of troubleshooting dark switchboards or cramped electrical lockers.
For enhanced system protection, the internal mechanism utilises a trip-free design. This vital safety feature ensures the breaker cannot be manually held in the closed position while a fault current is still present, protecting your cables and connected devices from sustained thermal damage.
- Dual Functionality: Combines 30A overcurrent circuit protection and manual on/off switching into one space-saving component.
- SAE J1171 Ignition Protected: Safe for installation aboard petrol-powered boats and near battery boxes where explosive gases may accumulate.
- High-Visibility Status: Features a bright yellow reset lever that clearly shows when the circuit is tripped and open.
- Manual Push-to-Trip: Red release button enables quick manual circuit interruption for safe servicing and storage isolation.
- Trip-Free Mechanism: Internal contacts cannot be forced or held closed during an active overcurrent fault condition.
- Weather-Resistant Build: Sealed housing resists moisture, salt spray, and dust ingress in exposed marine and 4WD environments.
Application Guidelines and System Integration
The panel-mount form factor allows for clean, flush integration into custom switchboards, marine helm panels, and caravan power distribution hubs. While this breaker effectively combines switching and circuit protection, please note an important operational exclusion: do not use this breaker as a regular manual switch where high inrush currents are expected, as repeated high-inrush switching can prematurely wear the thermal trip mechanism.
Equip your vessel, 4WD, or off-grid power system with professional-grade electrical protection. Add the Blue Sea 285-Series 30A Thermal Circuit Breaker to your setup today for safe, resettable circuit management.
