Blue Sea 32A 2-pole equipment leakage circuit interrupter with power and fault indicators

Blue Sea 230VAC 32A 2-Pole Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter (ELCI) with 30mA Trip

DESCRIPTION

Comprehensive AC Main Circuit Protection for Marine and Mobile Power Systems

Managing 230V AC shore power, inverter outputs, or onboard generators requires uncompromising circuit safety. The Blue Sea Systems Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter (ELCI) provides robust main circuit protection for marine vessels, caravans, and off-grid power distribution panels. By combining traditional overcurrent protection with residual current sensing in a single unit, this device acts as a vital safeguard against electrical fires, equipment damage, and electrocution hazards.

In marine and mobile environments, moisture ingress, salt air, and constant vibration can degrade wiring insulation over time. Standard circuit breakers only respond to thermal overloads or dead short circuits, leaving systems vulnerable to low-level ground faults. This 2-pole ELCI actively monitors the balance of current between the active and neutral conductors, immediately disconnecting both poles if it detects a leakage to ground exceeding 30mA.

Key Features and System Benefits

  • Triple-Action Trip Protection: Automatically disconnects the AC circuit in the event of a short circuit, current overload, or dangerous leakage to ground.
  • Dual-Pole Isolation: Simultaneously breaks both the active and neutral lines, which is essential for safely isolating shore power where reverse polarity or neutral-to-ground faults may exist.
  • Integrated Diagnostic LEDs: Features dedicated front-panel indicators for active AC power status and a specific red fault LED to confirm when a ground leakage trip has occurred.
  • Built-In Test Functionality: Equipped with a push-to-test button to facilitate routine monthly safety compliance checks and verify mechanical trip performance.
  • Vibration-Resistant Mounting: Engineered for clean front-panel installation using durable threaded brass inserts, ensuring the unit remains secure in rough seas or corrugated off-road conditions.
  • Trip-Free Design: Internal mechanism ensures the contacts cannot be manually held in the closed position while an active fault condition persists on the line.

Engineered for Diagnostic Clarity and Harsh Environments

Troubleshooting electrical faults at sea or in a remote campsite can be challenging without the right diagnostic feedback. Unlike standard consumer-grade residual current devices (RCDs) or RCBOs designed for static residential switchboards, this Blue Sea ELCI is specifically built for dynamic mobile applications. The inclusion of a dedicated leakage fault LED allows system operators and marine electricians to instantly differentiate between a standard appliance overload and a potentially hazardous earth leakage fault. This significantly reduces diagnostic downtime and prevents repeated resetting into an active ground fault.

The heavy-duty rocker switch provides clear, tactile operation with distinct ON and OFF markings, preventing accidental actuation. Its compact front-panel footprint integrates seamlessly into custom switchboards or existing Blue Sea Systems modular power distribution panels, delivering a professional, factory-grade finish.

Typical Applications

Rated for 230V AC systems up to 32A, this unit is ideally suited as a main incoming breaker for a variety of demanding setups:

  • Marine Shore Power Inlets: Provides whole-boat protection when connected to marina shore power pedestals, mitigating the risk of stray current corrosion and electric shock drowning (ESD).
  • Onboard Marine Generators: Protects downstream AC distribution panels from faults originating within the vessel's wiring loom.
  • Caravan, RV, and Motorhome AC Distribution: Acts as a primary safety switch for high-capacity off-grid inverter-charger systems and mains hook-ups.
  • Specialised Mobile Workstations: Ensures occupational safety compliance in mobile command units, service trucks, and off-grid industrial cabins.
