Blue Sea 187-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 187-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Up to 48V DC | Ignition Protected | 5/16" (M8) Studs | Trip-Free

DESCRIPTION
Heavy-Duty DC Overcurrent Protection and Manual Switching
Managing high-current electrical pathways in marine, automotive, and off-grid installations requires dependable overcurrent protection. The Blue Sea 187 Series Surface-Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker integrates precise thermal circuit protection and manual single-lever switching into one compact, robust housing. By combining these two functions, it eliminates the need to wire separate fuse holders and battery switches, simplifying your layout and reducing potential failure points across your system.
Rated for DC electrical systems up to 48V maximum, this unit is highly adaptable for 12V, 24V, and 48V battery setups. Whether you are securing a primary battery bank in a touring 4WD, protecting heavy-duty loads in a caravan, or managing onboard marine power, the 187 Series provides reliable circuit interruption when overloads or short circuits occur.
Engineered for Demanding Marine and Off-Grid Environments
Inferior circuit breakers often suffer from voltage drop, corroded terminals, or mechanical failure when exposed to harsh environments. The Blue Sea 187 Series solves these common issues through marine-grade engineering and robust materials. It is fully ignition protected, meaning it is engineered not to ignite surrounding flammable gases if a spark occurs internally. This makes it safe for installation in the engine compartments of petrol-powered boats and vehicles, reducing the risk of catastrophic electrical fires.
Safety is further enhanced by a mechanical trip-free design. In the event of an active electrical fault, the internal mechanism cannot be manually held in the ON position. This critical safety feature protects your wiring harness and connected appliances from thermal damage while you troubleshoot the fault.
Key Features and Benefits
- Dual-Function Design: Combines automatic thermal overcurrent protection and manual ON/OFF circuit switching in a single unit.
- High-Visibility Status Lever: The bright yellow reset lever provides clear visual confirmation of tripped status and allows for straightforward manual operation.
- Heavy-Duty Terminal Studs: Equipped with 5/16" (Approx. M8) stainless steel terminal studs that support high-torque connections and provide ample clearance for heavy-gauge wire lugs.
- Trip-Free Safety Mechanism: Prevents the circuit from being forced closed during an ongoing overcurrent fault, safeguarding downstream cabling and equipment.
- Ignition Protected: Safe for installation aboard petrol-powered vessels and near fuel sources.
- Simple Surface Mounting: Pre-drilled mounting holes allow for secure, straightforward installation onto flat electrical panels, bulkheads, or battery box enclosures.
- Wide Voltage Compatibility: Rated for DC systems up to 48V maximum, suiting standard 12V automotive systems through to 24V and 48V off-grid power banks.
Practical Applications and Operational Considerations
This surface-mount breaker is well suited for protecting main DC feed lines, auxiliary battery charging circuits, inverters, and other high-draw DC distribution branches. Its generous stud spacing accommodates back-to-back lug installation without interfering with the enclosure housing.
Important Use Limitation: While this device functions effectively as a manual disconnect switch for maintenance or storage, do not use this breaker as a regular switch where high inrush currents are expected, as repeated switching under heavy surge loads can prematurely wear the internal contacts.
Upgrade Your Circuit Protection
Ensure your high-current DC wiring is properly safeguarded against overloads and short circuits. Select the Blue Sea 187 Series Surface-Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker for your marine vessel, caravan, or off-grid power system to achieve safe, compliant, and streamlined electrical distribution.
