Blue Sea 150A 187-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker

DESCRIPTION

Integrated Switching and Heavy-Duty Circuit Protection

The Blue Sea 187-Series 150A Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers reliable overcurrent protection and manual switching in a single, robust unit. Engineered for demanding marine, automotive, and off-grid DC electrical systems, this high-amperage breaker eliminates the need to wire a separate fuse block and battery isolation switch. By consolidating two critical functions into one compact footprint, it streamlines your installation, reduces potential failure points in your wiring harness, and saves valuable mounting space inside battery boxes or electrical canopies.

Unlike standard unsealed breakers that are prone to corrosion, nuisance tripping, and premature mechanical failure, the 187-Series is purpose-built for harsh Australian environments. Its waterproof construction protects the internal thermal mechanism from moisture ingress, salt spray, and dust, ensuring dependable performance whether installed in the hull of a boat, the canopy of a 4WD touring rig, or a caravan power distribution board.

Safety-First Engineering and Ignition Protection

When managing high-current 12V, 24V, or 48V DC loads, safety and compliance are paramount. This thermal circuit breaker features a vital trip-free design, meaning the internal mechanism cannot be manually held in the closed (ON) position while an active fault current condition exists. This prevents severe cable overheating, melted insulation, and potential electrical fires caused by operators attempting to force a circuit live during a short circuit or severe overload.

Furthermore, the unit is certified as ignition protected. It will not emit an external spark when tripping or switching, making it entirely safe for installation in the engine compartments of petrol-powered boats, marine vessels, or enclosed spaces where flammable LPG or fuel vapours may accumulate.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Combined Switching and Protection: High-visibility yellow manual reset lever clearly indicates trip status and allows for immediate manual circuit disconnection during maintenance or storage.
  • Heavy-Duty M10 Terminal Studs: Equipped with robust stainless steel M10 terminal studs designed to accept heavy-gauge ring terminals and support high-torque cable connections without stripping or corroding.
  • Trip-Free Safety Mechanism: Ensures the breaker trips and remains disconnected during a fault condition, even if the control lever is physically held in the ON position.
  • Waterproof and Ignition Protected: Sealed against water ingress and certified safe for use aboard petrol-powered marine vessels and hazardous environments.
  • Clean Surface-Mount Profile: Features integrated, recessed mounting holes that provide a secure attachment to flat panels while maintaining a neat, professional appearance.

Application Considerations and Best Practices

The 150A rating makes this breaker ideal for protecting main DC feeder lines, heavy-duty windlasses, hydraulic pumps, and high-output dual battery charging systems. The generous clearance around the M10 studs easily accommodates heavy-duty battery cable lugs for low-resistance connections.

Important Application Note: As stated by the manufacturer, this thermal circuit breaker is not intended for use as a regular manual on/off switch where high inrush currents are expected (such as directly switching large power inverters with uncharged internal capacitors). Frequent switching under heavy inrush loads can cause premature wear on the internal contacts. For high-inrush applications, use this breaker strictly for overcurrent protection and Emergency isolation, while utilizing a dedicated heavy-duty battery switch or contactor for routine switching.
