Blue Sea 120A panel mount thermal circuit breaker with red trip button and yellow reset lever

Blue Sea 120A 285-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker

DESCRIPTION

Heavy-Duty 120A Circuit Protection and Switching for Marine and Off-Grid Systems

Managing high-amperage DC electrical loads requires dependable overcurrent protection that can withstand demanding environments. The Blue Sea 285-Series 120A Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers reliable protection for heavy electrical loads while combining switching and circuit protection into a single, compact device. Designed specifically for recessed panel mounting, this unit provides a clean, integrated installation on control panels, battery distribution boards, and bulkhead enclosures in marine vessels, caravans, 4WDs, and off-grid power setups.

Certified Ignition Protection for Engine Compartments

Safety is critical when installing electrical components near fuel sources. This 120A thermal circuit breaker is fully certified to meet SAE J1171 external ignition protection requirements. This certification makes it safe for installation aboard petrol-powered boats and inside enclosed engine compartments or battery boxes where explosive fumes or gases may be present. Unlike standard commercial-grade breakers that may produce an exposed internal spark when tripping under a heavy fault, the sealed architecture of the 285-Series isolates internal arcing, significantly reducing the risk of accidental ignition in volatile environments.

Intuitive Operation and Trip-Free Safety Design

Engineered for practical usability and system safety, the breaker incorporates a high-visibility yellow reset lever that drops down to provide an immediate, clear visual indication when a circuit has tripped. For routine maintenance or emergency isolation, a prominent red push-to-trip button allows you to manually interrupt the circuit and test the mechanism's mechanical function. Crucially, the unit features a trip-free design. This internal safety mechanism ensures the breaker cannot be manually held in the closed position while a fault current persists, protecting your wiring and expensive downstream electronics from severe thermal damage or electrical fire.

  • Dual-Function Design: Combines heavy-duty 120A overcurrent protection and manual circuit switching into one streamlined unit.
  • SAE J1171 Compliant: Certified ignition protected for safe deployment in marine bilges, engine bays, and petrol boat installations.
  • Trip-Free Mechanism: Prevents the circuit from being forced closed during an active electrical fault or overload condition.
  • Clear Visual Status: High-visibility yellow reset lever clearly indicates an open circuit, paired with a manual red push-to-trip button.
  • Weather-Resistant Build: Sealed construction resists moisture, salt spray, and dust ingress in harsh Australian conditions.
  • Flush Panel Mounting: Top and bottom mounting holes allow secure recessed installation into flat surfaces and custom electrical panels.

Application Considerations and System Integration

While the Blue Sea 285-Series is capable of functioning as both a protective device and a master disconnect switch for 12V, 24V, and 48V DC systems (up to its rated voltage limits), proper application is essential for longevity. Do not use this breaker as a regular on/off switch where high inrush currents are expected, such as directly switching large inverter capacitor banks or heavy motor loads under draw, as repeated high-inrush switching can degrade the internal thermal contacts over time.

Compared to basic single-use fuses, a resettable thermal circuit breaker eliminates the frustration of hunting for replacement fuses in the dark or while out on the water. Its robust, weather-resistant housing ensures long-term durability against vibration and coastal corrosion, making it a preferred choice for professional auto electricians and marine technicians.
