Blue Sea 100A/50mV DC Shunt
Blue Sea 100A/50mV DC Shunt
Includes Insulated Mounting Base - 66A Continuous Rating for Ammeters

DESCRIPTION
Precision DC Current Measurement for Marine and Off-Grid Power Systems
Accurately monitoring electrical loads and charging inputs is essential for maintaining the health and longevity of any 12V, 24V, or 48V battery bank. The Blue Sea 100A/50mV DC Shunt is engineered to provide precise current sensing when paired with digital or analogue DC ammeters and battery monitors. By creating a highly calibrated, low-resistance path in your circuit, this current shunt produces an exact millivolt voltage drop proportional to the current flowing through it. This allows your monitoring instruments to safely read heavy DC loads without routing thick, high-amperage battery cables directly behind your dashboard or control panel.
Engineered for Safety and Signal Accuracy
Inferior current sensing components often suffer from resistance drift caused by thermal expansion, leading to inaccurate state-of-charge readings and potential overheating at the connection points. The Blue Sea Systems 9230B shunt addresses these risks through superior metallurgical construction and intelligent design. It features solid brass terminal blocks that offer exceptional conductivity and corrosion resistance, making it highly dependable in harsh marine environments, humid tropics, and high-vibration 4WD or caravan installations.
The precision parallel metal strips form a resistive bridge that maintains calibration across varying load conditions. Furthermore, this unit comes pre-mounted on a moulded black plastic base. This integrated insulating base eliminates the risk of accidental short circuits against conductive vehicle chassis, metal enclosures, or marine bulkheads, significantly simplifying the installation process while enhancing overall electrical safety.
Key Features and Benefits
- Calibrated 50mV Output: Delivers a standard 50mV signal at 100A full scale, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of Blue Sea Systems meters and third-party DC ammeters.
- Integrated Insulated Base: Moulded black plastic mounting base isolates the live conductive blocks from the mounting surface, preventing dangerous ground faults.
- Heavy-Duty Brass Terminals: Robust load bolts securely clamp heavy-gauge battery lugs, minimising contact resistance and heat generation.
- Dedicated Sense Screws: Separate small screw terminals allow for secure, straightforward wiring of twisted-pair millivolt signal leads to your display unit.
- Safe Remote Monitoring: Keeps high-current cabling confined to the main battery compartment or distribution box, reducing voltage drop and fire hazards in the cabin.
System Sizing and Continuous Operation Guidance
To ensure optimal thermal performance and long-term measurement stability, industry best practice dictates de-rating current shunts for continuous loads. Under normal operating conditions, it is recommended not to run this shunt above two-thirds (66%) of its rated capacity. This gives the 100A shunt a practical continuous current rating of 66A, while still allowing it to accurately measure intermittent peak loads up to the full 100A limit. This sizing makes it an ideal match for small-to-medium auxiliary battery systems, solar charge controller outputs, or dedicated DC sub-panels.
Ideal Applications
- Marine Electrical Systems: Monitoring house battery banks, bilge pump draws, and alternator charging outputs on boats and yachts.
- Caravans and RVs: Tracking energy consumption from 12V appliances, lighting circuits, and solar charging setups.
- 4WD Dual Battery Setups: Keeping an eye on fridge draws, DC-DC charger inputs, and auxiliary accessories during remote off-grid travel.
- Industrial and Telecom Equipment: Providing reliable current feedback for backup power supplies and remote telemetry stations.
