Blue Sea 100A/50mA AC Current Sensing Coil for AC Ammeters
Blue Sea 100A/50mA AC Current Sensing Coil for AC Ammeters
Non-Contact Toroidal Current Transformer with Encapsulated Housing

DESCRIPTION
Precision Non-Contact AC Current Measurement for Marine and Off-Grid Power Systems
Monitoring high-amperage Alternating Current (AC) loads requires safe, accurate, and reliable hardware. The Blue Sea Systems 100A/50mA AC Current Sensing Coil acts as a specialised current transformer, stepping down a primary load of up to 100A into a safe, proportional 50mA secondary signal. This allows compatible AC ammeters and digital power monitors to accurately track system load without routing heavy-gauge, high-voltage AC conductors directly to the instrument panel.
Engineered for demanding environments, this sensing coil is widely used in marine electrical systems, RV shore power setups, and off-grid inverter/charger installations. By isolating the monitoring display from the primary AC circuit, it significantly reduces installation complexity and mitigates electrical hazards behind the helm or control board.
Safe Toroidal Design and Simplified Installation
Unlike DC shunts that require cutting cables and bolting heavy lugs in-line, this AC current transformer utilises a closed-loop toroidal (ring) architecture for non-contact induction measurement. Installers simply pass the primary AC hot conductor through the centre aperture of the coil. As alternating current flows through the main cable, the coil induces a proportional 50mA current at full 100A scale, which travels through the integrated secondary wire leads directly to the AC ammeter.
This non-intrusive method eliminates extra termination points in your primary high-load wiring, removing potential points of high resistance, voltage drop, and heat build-up.
Key Features and Benefits
- 100A to 50mA Sensing Ratio: Provides linear signal scaling for compatible analogue and digital AC ammeters requiring a 50mA full-scale input.
- Non-Contact Toroidal Architecture: Measures alternating current via electromagnetic induction, eliminating the need to splice into primary AC supply cables.
- Encapsulated Marine-Grade Housing: Protects the internal windings from moisture, vibration, and corrosion in harsh marine and mobile environments.
- Integrated Secondary Leads: Supplied with factory-attached flying leads for straightforward termination to the rear of your monitoring gauge.
- Enhanced Panel Safety: Keeps high-voltage, high-current AC mains cabling safely inside the main distribution enclosure rather than behind the dashboard.
Built for Reliability in Demanding Environments
Standard industrial current transformers often struggle with the constant vibration and damp conditions found in boats and recreational vehicles. Blue Sea Systems addresses these challenges with a fully encapsulated housing that shields the internal transformer core from salt mist, humidity, and mechanical shock. Using a properly matched, marine-grade sensing coil prevents inaccurate load readings that could otherwise lead to tripped shore power breakers or overloaded inverters.
Typical Applications
- Monitoring AC shore power incoming loads on marine vessels and motorhomes
- Tracking output amperage from onboard marine generators and off-grid AC inverters
- Replacing or upgrading sensing coils for Blue Sea Systems analogue and digital AC ammeter panels
- Custom AC distribution switchboards requiring compact, isolated current measurement
Upgrade Your AC Power Monitoring
Ensure accurate load management and a safer switchboard layout in your vessel, caravan, or off-grid system. Add the Blue Sea Systems 100A/50mA AC Current Sensing Coil to your electrical setup for dependable, non-contact current measurement.
