Blue Sea 100A 285-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 100A 285-Series Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
SAE J1171 Ignition Protected, On-Off Switching & Trip-Free Safety

DESCRIPTION
Combined 100A DC Switching and Thermal Overcurrent Protection
The Blue Sea 285-Series 100A Panel Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers reliable overcurrent protection and manual on-off switching in a single, streamlined unit. Engineered for demanding marine, caravan, and off-grid DC electrical systems, this dual-function design eliminates the need for a separate battery switch and fuse holder. By consolidating components, it saves valuable dashboard or distribution panel space while reducing wiring complexity and potential voltage drop points across your heavy-duty electrical circuits.
Designed as a direct drop-in replacement for older 185-Series circuit breakers, the 285-Series allows for straightforward system upgrades without requiring new panel cutouts or extensive re-wiring. The flush panel-mount form factor provides a clean, professional finish on dashboards, electrical enclosures, and custom distribution boards.
Engineered for Harsh Marine and Automotive Environments
Standard automotive circuit breakers can corrode quickly or pose safety hazards when exposed to moisture and fuel vapours. The Blue Sea 285-Series features a weather-resistant construction specifically built to withstand damp, salt-laden marine atmospheres and dusty off-road conditions. Furthermore, it meets strict SAE J1171 external ignition protection requirements. This critical safety rating ensures the internal mechanism will not ignite surrounding flammable gases, making it compliant and safe for installation aboard petrol-powered vessels, in boat bilges, and inside caravan battery compartments.
Intuitive Operation and Fail-Safe Design
Managing high-current 100A loads requires absolute clarity and dependable safety mechanisms. This thermal circuit breaker incorporates a high-visibility yellow reset lever that drops down to provide an immediate visual indication when a circuit has tripped. For routine maintenance or emergency isolation, the recessed red manual trip button allows you to instantly disconnect power to downstream equipment.
To prevent catastrophic wire damage or electrical fires during a persistent short circuit, the unit utilises a trip-free mechanism. This essential safety feature ensures that the internal contacts cannot be manually held in the closed position while a fault condition still exists, protecting your cabling and expensive appliances from thermal overload.
Key Features and Benefits
- Dual-Function Design: Combines 100A thermal circuit protection and manual on-off circuit switching into one compact unit.
- SAE J1171 Ignition Protected: Safe for installation in petrol engine compartments and enclosed battery boxes.
- Trip-Free Safety Mechanism: Cannot be forced or held closed during an active overcurrent fault, reducing the risk of cable damage.
- Clear Status Indication: High-contrast yellow lever visibly shows when the circuit is open, paired with a red push-to-trip button for manual isolation.
- Weather-Resistant Housing: Built to resist moisture and corrosion in marine, 4WD, and off-grid environments.
- Drop-In Compatibility: Shares the exact mounting footprint of the 185-Series for seamless retrofitting.
Application Guidelines and Exclusions
This 100A thermal breaker is well suited for protecting main DC sub-panels, high-output alternators, dual-battery charging systems, and heavy-duty accessories in 12V, 24V, and 32V applications. Please note an important operational exclusion: do not use this breaker as a regular manual switch where high inrush currents are expected, such as directly switching large inverters or windlasses under load, as repeated high-inrush switching can degrade the internal contacts over time.
Upgrade Your DC Circuit Protection
Secure your vessel, 4WD, or off-grid power system with marine-grade overcurrent protection. Add the Blue Sea 285-Series 100A Panel Mount Circuit Breaker to your setup today for dependable, space-saving electrical safety.
