DESCRIPTION
Victron 3600W Isolation Transformer: Advanced Shore Power Protection for Marine and Industrial Systems
Eliminate Galvanic Corrosion and Enhance Electrical Safety with Automatic Voltage Switching
The Victron Energy 3600W Isolation Transformer provides a robust solution for vessels and installations requiring complete electrical separation from shore power. By breaking the metallic connection between the shore-side supply and your onboard AC system, it prevents galvanic corrosion and ensures reliable operation of safety devices such as GFCIs and circuit breakers. This model features automatic detection and switching between 115V and 230V input, making it suitable for international cruising or variable marina supplies.
Unlike standard transformers, this unit incorporates a soft start circuit that limits inrush current, preventing nuisance tripping of shore-side breakers. The toroidal core design reduces weight and audible noise while maintaining high efficiency, and the 1:1.05 winding ratio compensates for voltage drop over long cable runs, delivering a stable 120V or 240V output to your onboard equipment.
Why Galvanic Isolation Matters
When a vessel connects to shore power, the shore earth conductor bonds to the boat's metal components, creating a path for stray currents. This accelerates corrosion of underwater metals such as propellers, shafts, and through-hull fittings, even on fibreglass hulls. Sacrificial anodes deplete rapidly, and critical components face premature failure. The Victron Isolation Transformer eliminates this pathway by magnetically coupling energy while maintaining complete galvanic separation between shore and vessel grounds.
Additionally, without isolation, a shore-side ground fault can energise the boat's bonding system, posing a shock hazard. The transformer's secondary winding establishes a new onboard neutral-to-ground bond, ensuring that GFCIs and overcurrent devices function correctly, protecting both equipment and personnel.
Key Features
- Automatic 115/230V input detection – adapts to global shore power without manual switching
- Soft start technology – eliminates high inrush currents that trip marina breakers
- Toroidal transformer design – low weight, compact size, and minimal audible hum
- 1:1.05 voltage boost – compensates for cable losses, ensuring full voltage at the panel
- IP21 aluminium enclosure – corrosion-resistant powder coating for marine environments
- Comprehensive safety compliance – meets EN 60076, suitable for global installations
Built for Harsh Marine Environments
The transformer is housed in a durable aluminium case with a blue RAL 5012 powder-coated finish, providing excellent resistance to salt spray and humidity. Rated for operation in temperatures from -20°C to 40°C and up to 95% non-condensing humidity, it withstands the demanding conditions found in engine rooms and lazarettes. The IP21 protection rating guards against vertically falling water drops, and the integrated cooling vents ensure reliable thermal management during continuous operation.
Heavy-duty cable glands provide secure, strain-relieved entry for input and output wiring, while the compact footprint simplifies installation in space-constrained areas. At 23 kg, the unit remains manageable for mounting on bulkheads or decks.
Versatile Configuration Options
This isolation transformer can be deployed in multiple configurations to suit your system voltage requirements:
- 115V to 120V isolation – for North American standard systems
- 230V to 240V isolation – for European and Australian systems
- 115V to 240V step-up – power 240V equipment from a 115V shore supply
- 230V to 120V step-down – run 120V loads when only 230V shore power is available
This flexibility makes it an ideal choice for vessels that travel internationally or for industrial applications where voltage conversion and isolation are both required.
Professional-Grade Safety and Reliability
Victron Energy designs its isolation transformers to meet stringent marine and industrial standards. The toroidal core not only reduces weight but also minimises stray magnetic fields, reducing interference with nearby electronics. The soft start circuit is integrated into the transformer, requiring no external components, and engages automatically every time shore power is connected.
For optimal safety, it is recommended to connect the secondary neutral to the vessel's ground when the boat is out of the water, ensuring full fault protection during maintenance or storage.
Protect Your Investment with Proven Isolation Technology
Whether you are refitting a cruising yacht, building a new commercial vessel, or upgrading an industrial control panel, the Victron 3600W Isolation Transformer delivers the electrical separation and voltage adaptability essential for long-term reliability. Eliminate the risk of galvanic corrosion, ensure compliance with marine electrical codes, and enjoy peace of mind knowing your onboard systems are fully protected.
