Blue Sea 80A double-pole toggle circuit breaker with white joined handle and black dual-pole housing

Blue Sea 80A C-Series Double-Pole Toggle Circuit Breaker

DESCRIPTION

Heavy-Duty Magnetic Hydraulic Circuit Protection and Switching

The Blue Sea C-Series 80A Double-Pole Toggle Circuit Breaker combines high-capacity overcurrent protection and reliable manual switching into a single, compact device. Engineered for demanding marine, RV, and off-grid electrical systems, this dual-pole breaker streamlines your distribution panel by eliminating the need for a separate switch and fuse combination. The integrated ergonomic white toggle handle bridges both poles, allowing you to manually isolate the circuit with ease while providing instant visual confirmation of the operational status.

Advanced Magnetic Hydraulic Technology

Unlike standard thermal circuit breakers that rely on heat-sensitive bimetallic strips, the C-Series utilises a precision magnetic hydraulic mechanism. Standard thermal units can suffer from nuisance tripping in hot engine bays, enclosed battery boxes, or extreme Australian summer conditions because ambient heat lowers their trip threshold. The magnetic hydraulic design senses only the actual electrical current flowing through the coil, ensuring the 80A trip rating remains consistent and unaffected by ambient temperature fluctuations. This technology significantly reduces the risk of unexpected power dropouts while maintaining rapid, accurate response times during genuine overload or short-circuit events.

Synchronised Double-Pole Isolation

A double-pole configuration is critical for electrical applications where breaking both conductors simultaneously is required for safety and compliance. The mechanically linked internal trip mechanism ensures that if an overcurrent fault occurs on either line, both poles trip open instantly, even if the external toggle handle is physically held in the ON position. This trip-free design protects sensitive downstream equipment and prevents dangerous back-feeding or partial circuit energisation. It is widely used for isolating positive and negative DC main feeds or active and neutral AC supply lines in complex dual-voltage installations.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Dual-Function Design: Combines heavy-duty 80A overcurrent protection and manual circuit switching in one unit to save valuable panel space and simplify wiring.
  • Temperature-Stable Operation: Magnetic hydraulic trip mechanism is unaffected by high ambient temperatures, preventing nuisance tripping in hot enclosures or marine engine rooms.
  • Common Internal Trip: Mechanically linked poles ensure both circuits disconnect simultaneously if a fault is detected on either pole.
  • Trip-Free Safety Mechanism: Internal contacts cannot be held closed manually during a fault condition, ensuring reliable protection against severe overloads.
  • Robust Rear Stud Terminals: Heavy-duty screw-down stud terminals provide high-torque, low-resistance connections suitable for large-gauge battery and distribution cables.
  • Front-Panel Mounting: Integrated threaded brass inserts allow for secure, straightforward installation into custom switch panels and power distribution boards.

Engineered for Demanding Electrical Environments

Constructed with a durable black housing and corrosion-resistant internal components, the Blue Sea Systems C-Series is built to withstand vibration, moisture, and harsh operating conditions. The rear heavy-duty stud terminals are designed to accommodate substantial ring lugs, minimising voltage drop and heat build-up across the connection points during continuous high-current loads. Clearly marked amperage labelling on the front face and detailed technical specification labels on the side housing assist installers and inspectors with quick visual verification.

Typical Applications

This 80A double-pole circuit breaker is a versatile component suited to a wide variety of mobile, marine, and stationary power systems:

  • Main battery bank isolation and protection in 12V, 24V, and 48V DC off-grid solar setups
  • Primary AC shore power or generator transfer switching in marine vessels and motorhomes
  • Protecting high-draw inverters, bow thrusters, windlasses, and DC-to-DC charging systems
  • Industrial control panels and custom mobile work vehicle power distribution boards
