Blue Sea 120A 285-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
Blue Sea 120A 285-Series Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker
SAE J1171 Ignition Protected - Manual Trip Button & Protective Caps

DESCRIPTION
Heavy-Duty 120A DC Circuit Protection and Manual Disconnect
The Blue Sea 285-Series 120A Surface Mount Thermal Circuit Breaker delivers dependable overcurrent protection and manual switching in a single, compact unit. Engineered for demanding mobile, marine, and off-grid electrical architectures, this 120A circuit breaker safeguards high-current wiring and appliances from thermal overload and short circuits. By combining switching and protection functions, it eliminates the need for separate fuse holders and isolation switches, streamlining your system layout and reducing potential failure points.
Engineered for Harsh Marine and Automotive Environments
When working with volatile fuels or enclosed battery compartments, safety compliance is critical. The 285-Series meets strict SAE J1171 external ignition protection requirements, meaning it is designed to prevent internal sparks from igniting surrounding flammable gases. This makes it safe for installation in petrol-powered marine engine rooms, boat bilges, and vented battery enclosures.
Unlike inferior alternatives that suffer from voltage drop, nuisance tripping, or terminal corrosion in damp environments, Blue Sea Systems builds this breaker for long-term reliability. It features heavy-duty stainless steel connection studs that securely accommodate high-current power cables, while tethered rubber protective caps shield the live terminals from moisture, salt spray, and accidental shorting.
Key Features and Benefits
- Dual-Function Design: Combines heavy-duty 120A thermal overcurrent protection with a manual on/off switching mechanism.
- SAE J1171 Ignition Protected: Safe for installation aboard petrol-powered boats and near battery banks where explosive gases may accumulate.
- Clear Visual Status: The high-visibility yellow reset lever clearly indicates a tripped state and allows for quick restoration of power without replacing fuses.
- Manual Trip Button: A recessed red button enables safe, immediate circuit interruption for system maintenance, testing, or emergency shutdowns.
- Environmental Shielding: Integrated tethered rubber boots protect the heavy-duty stainless steel terminal studs from moisture, dust, and debris.
- Vibration-Resistant Mounting: Designed with recessed surface mounting holes for a secure, flush installation on flat panels, firewalls, or bulkheads.
Versatile High-Current Applications
Whether you are fitting out a 4WD dual-battery system, upgrading a caravan electrical setup, or rewiring a marine vessel, the Blue Sea 285-Series 120A breaker provides robust circuit management. It is ideally suited for:
